Although I make a better quilter than cake-decorater, I still give it a try whenever a birthday or special event rolls around. I very much enjoy and appreciate the talent on this site.

I do not keep up with the cake decorating trends, but I have noticed more free-hand type scroll work and painting and such. Anyway - have any of you considered finding inspiration from quilt designs? Not the fabric/ pattern - but the actual quilting?
Quilt patterns offer a beautiful varitey of cake-decorating genious! Try searching "images of feathered quilt designs" and see the possiblilities. (feathers happen to be my favorite)
If you have a quilt friend, ask her to teach you some free-hand designs.
There are many wonderful quilt books with design ideas that would look brilliant on wedding or special cakes and provide clear, easy patterns for your use.

I can try to attach a picture if you'd like a better visual.

Good luck with your creating and keep up the good work.

Thanks! I'm a quilter too and you just gave me a great idea. In the back of some (if not most) of my hardcover quilting idea books, there's plastic templates - think I'll go through some of them for stenciling ideas as well as ideas for placement of designs using cutters.
