I have been working in a bakery for awhile now. I am a very good worker, do as I'm asked, never late,
very helpful, etc.. But I always seem to be doing "alot" of the grunt work. The work that everyone else seems to hate to do like make tons of Cake Batter, all the icings, etc.. I am with the least amount of time. Since I am the one with the least amount of time do you still think this is Fear? I haven't complained or said anything "yet" but I feel like my self worth is going down the tubes. What would you do?

At my day job I am the last man on the ladder rung, so I get stuck doing the cleaning and taking out the trash. It sucks! But I can sorta see it, because as I am told (I work with family) they have put in the time already.

I wouldn't complain, especially if that is what you were hired on to do. BUT you could always talk to the manager/owner and let them know that you would love to start learning more or doing other jobs duties as well.

Unless when I was hired I was told I would not be doing most of the grunt work....that is if I was explicitly told I would be doing things other than the grunt work then I would continue to do my job. Fairly common practice in any industry that the low person on the totem pole gets stuck doing the grunt work. And it is fair to assume that unless you are hired to do particular things, you are starting at the bottom and will being doing a lot of the grunt work. Part of the whole paying your dues thing and benefits of seniority.

Now if it is a question of abuse that is a different story--i.e. people exploiting me because I was the lowest on the totem pole. However doing the grunt work is not itself a sign of abuse. Is it the pits, especially when you see others doing things you want to do, most certainly. But doubtful that the boss is going to have any sympathy for me, especially since the more senior probably employees went through it as well. I look for opportunities for promotion but complain--nope.

Keep working hard and learning. Someone is going to notice! Mention to the higher ups that you would like the opportunity to advance. Then, look for a different job if you are still unhappy. I have had numerous jobs and finally ended up with the perfect position after many low man on the totem pole, abusive jobs.

Yep, grunt work until someone quits and you prove that you can take on more tasks. It's like that everywhere.
