Hello! I have a friend wanting to do a sonic themes cake they found online. It's all made with fondant and gumpaste but I'm an all buttercream girl. I've attached the picture. I can do fondant decorations but don't like to cover my cakes in fondant. I have an idea on how I'd to the top tier but don't know about the bottom. It's edible image but I was trying to think of a different way to get that effect. Maybe piping with round tip dots with the 2 colors? But I don't know how that'd turn out. Any suggestions? I also was wondering about the gumpaste rings. Would I cut those out or roll them out? Apply to the cake with icing?

Hi,

The pic is not very clear, at least not to me, i can barely see what the bottom tier design looks like. Can you repost a better pic?

I'm exactly like you...I do buttercream cakes with fondant used as decorations only.

If it was me and someone sent that cake picture, I would explain that the only way they could have that exact effect on the bottom is an edible image. (You can put an edible image straight on buttercream).

Otherwise I would do basketweave with two colors and small tips. It will take a long time!! ..

Did the picture description say those were gumpaste rings? I just assumed they were plastic. I use candy melts when I need to glue things onto my cake or cake board. With something that thin, it's going to show, so be sure you have candy melts (or the right kind of candy melts coloring) to make it match your cake board.

Hi, The bottom layer is with edible image. You can use the sheets with fondant, buttercream or whippcream! The foto you use is mine. If you have any questions about how I made this, don't hesitate to email me. I sell the printed edible image too. I used 2 sheets for this cake.

For the rings I used gumpaste, cut with 2 diferent circles cutters. The top circles are smaller than the buttons circles. I attach them with royal icing. Work like cement. I apologize about my grammar. I'm from Puerto Rico.
