Hi all. I have joined an online cake school (don't know if I'm allowed to name it here), and the instructor says she exclusively uses Satin Ice Gum Paste. I've used their fondant before, but have never seen their gum paste. I found it online, but the shipping costs almost as much as the product itself! Does anyone know of a craft or party store chain that carries it? I checked Party Time online and they carry numerous colors of the fondant but only Wilton gum paste. Michael's doesn't seem to carry Satin Ice at all. I'd love to get some and try it. It seems to be cheaper than Wilton and Wilton's gets firm so fast I find it hard to work with. Any suggestions?

Also, there are recipes where you can make yr own from scratch out here but i havent tried any of them bc I just dont have the time to do it.

Im not sure where you are but there alot of online sources that sell it. Have you tried yr local cake supply stores?

msthang, Yes, I've tried the ones nearby (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), but no luck yet. I found an online source that sold the 5 lb. tub for $18.99! Compare that to 10.99 for 1 lb. of Wilton's! But the shipping on it cost almost as much as the gum paste. Maybe it's still worth it. Oh, and I've made my own twice, using gumtex and the recipe on the gum tex jar, but it's really soft and doesn't hold its shape and it's got an awful gray color to it! It also smells horrible. Yech!

Wow, yes that is crazy that you should be paying the same amount or more for shipping, YIKES!

Oh, they also have gumpaste mix in a bag that you just add water to and mix. Have you seen or try those. They are like $3 or so for a 1lb pkg

I love Satin Ice fondant but I do not like their gumpaste. I just add tylose to the fondant and go to town. Super cheap and super easy fix!

KoryAK, Can you tell me the ratio of Tylose powder to fondant? I've seen a wide variety of suggestions. Also, what if you only want to add Tylose to a small amount of fondant to mold one thing? I may not want to make an entire pound at once. Is there a rule of thumb or is it just an "eyeball it" kind of thing?
msthang, No, I've never tried the gumpaste mix. I've heard bad reviews on it, so never gave it a try.

It's totally an eyeball thing for me and yes you can add it to any amount that you'd like. If I had to guess I'd say a tablespoon to a pound? 2 teaspoons? More or less depending on how fast you want it to dry.

KoryAK, to you add the tylose right before you want to use it or do you have to let it rest for a certain period of time?

i actually really like satin ice gumpaste. in comparison to wilton's, i've never had to take any "hard bits" off the top or anything (feel like i used to lose half a bag to that!) Never had any wasted, unless i've coloured extra and it's sat there for a couple months... once i tried the satin ice gumpaste, i swore i'd never use the wilton stuff again and i haven't! that shipping is high though :s

I have worked with Tylose and fondant and really don't like it. I don't think you can get your fondant as thin as you can with just gum paste...flowers look too thick, it takes longer to dry and items are much heavier than with just GP. I use Wiltons but ALWAYS use the Michael's or Hobby Lobby 40% off coupon to get it. One or the other store always has a coupon online that you can print off. Totally worth it.

Though I would like to try Satin Ice sometime. Maybe I can get our cake supply store to get some.

I used Satin Ice gumpaste for the first time to make a crown for my DD's bday last week, and I must say I loved it vs my usual fondant mixed with CMC (we don't hv tylose here, or at least I've never seen one sold).

I tried making Nick Lodge's gumpaste once and it was a complete disaster though I believe it was user error rather than the recipe, but I was upset that I wasted so much PS and time for something I couldn't use at all. So I was jumping with excitement when I saw SI GP on the shelf and bought it without batting an eyelid.

I have used Satin Ice gumpaste and feel it is fine for modelling, but absolutely hate it for flowers.
My usual brand for flowers is from A * Piece* of * Cake in england, Alan Dunn uses the flower paste and it is just lovely. You get beautifully delicate flowers.
For my, Satin Ice gumpaste is just too thick and drys too quick for flower making, which is a shame, because the price is good, even over here in Germany, where it has to be imported.

I was thinking of making a batch of flower paste myself - it is usually a little too soft to work with and because of this, I am hoping that mixing it with satin ice gumpaste might give me good results.
If I get round to this experiment, I will post here, and if it was sucessful, I will happily supply the recipe.
I just need to decide if I want to risk my mixer again - have already "killed" 2 making flower paste - sadly no KA for me yet, just too expensive.

I use Satin Ice gumpaste as well and I LOVE it! The shipping is super expensive but I think it is worth it. I don't have to pick any hard bits off of it and it doesn't dry quite as fast so you can work with it for longer.

I love the SI gumpaste.

Hi all! I'm the one who started this thread, and I have to tell you what happened yesterday. I went into Party Time, which carries SI fondant, just to check and make sure they didn't have the gumpaste. As I walk in, this woman is asking "Do you carry Satin Ice gumpaste?" The manager said "No, we just carry their fondant". I couldn't believe the timing and coincidence! I told the manager I was just opening my mouth to ask the same question, then I told him they should really consider carrying it, since people are obviously asking for it. He said he would try to get it cleared.

I just recently started using Satin Ice gumpaste and love it! I agree with the other posters that it doesn't develop hard spots that must be discarded, and it does seem to dry a bit slower than Wilton--although it certainly hardens quickly enough for most of my uses. I don't make a lot of flowers, but tend to use it more for baby shoes, bows, and funky lettering . Although the shipping can be high (I haven't found it available in any retail stores in my area), I just combine the order with other items to keep the shipping per item down a bit.
