A friend of mine wants me to make a tres leches cake with zebra stripes. I use whipped icing for tres leches but I don't want to have to tint the icing black for the zebra stripes so I want to use fondant, plus I think it will look better. My question is, is it okay to put fondant on top of whipped icing or will it start to bleed. Thanks in advance.

I attempted it once with red hearts on a whipped cream cake and it did bleed. Not immediately, but after about an hour.
I'm not sure f there is a way to prevent this..I'd be interested in learning if there is.

I just tried this on a Tres Leches cake as an experiment. I took a small, hardened piece of fondant (about 1.5" round) and placed in on my cake to see what would happen overnight. It did indeed bleed just a little, but the fondant didn't disintegrate, to my surprise. I also have someone who wants a Tres Leches cake with a fondant accent next week, so I plan to apply the accent piece just before pickup and advise them of the issue.

Your zebra stripes though may be a bigger hassle, since there will be so many of them and they will be black, presumably. Can you apply the zebra stripes right before pickup? Will that help any?

Hi,

How about make a very thin piece of white fondant as a backing/barrier for yr colored fondant piece? This way the color wont bleed onto yr icing. Just a thought

Yes I can add them right before they need it but putting a white fondant backing first sounds perfect and that is what I will try. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks so much.

I was thinking along the lines of what MsThang ...but maybe cut your zebra stripes out of white fondant then paint them with food colouring after they are on and dry. Would be time consuming but at least you know there wouldn't be any change of bleeding
