Had to cancel a bride...she changed venues

Kind of sad tonight as the bride who I was working with sent me an e-mail about her wedding and I had to back out.
She originally scheduled a March wedding ( next year) but had to change it to a June wedding...not a problem. Then she changed the location to a lodge type hotel in Cambria. Boo!
That's at least a two and a half hour drive from me and though a heavily traveled, mountainous road.
Add in the sun here in California in the summer. There's no way I want to chance that one with the
all- butter icing she wanted.
Told her I'd hate to attempt it and disappoint her on her special day.
She had a good attitude about it. I'm the one that is sad.
This woman had picked out the most gorgeous black and white cake with rhinestone bling.
I was already researching it here on CC. ( Thanks by the way to those who answered my questions a couple of weeks ago.)
It had a black silk ribbon and a broach... I was so excited to make it.
Ahh....it was not to be.
I know my limits.
Maybe I'll get a call soon that will take away the sting. Ouch.

If you really love the cake, then do a dummy version of it! Great practice and a lot of funicon_wink.gif

I would rather make 1 cake for $150, than 3 for $50 each.

The person who works for nothing will always have plenty to do!

My sarcasm is good-humored. People generally really like me, in person ;-)

That really stinks! I know the feeling, but don't have much of an option to back out. My SIL is getting married in late August. Before she picked the venue I told her that my wedding gift would be her cake. She just booked a venue 2 hours away, two VERY windy, hilly hours away!! PLUS my husband and 2 of my kids, and myself are IN the wedding! The reception is not at the same place as the ceremony. I am soo nervous! But I feel obligated.

I would love to do it as a dummy cake, but I can't spare the money right now.
Need to save my money to buy supplies for a fundraiser coming up.
Two of my children will be traveling to Brazil this summer ( on a mission's trip..they play in a band that holds a big conference every year with Childress Ministries).

But someday, I'm going to wrap something in rhinestones!

Hi Mommachris!

Just had to respond to your post because you said the bride is now getting married in Cambria and it made me homesick! I was born and raised in Santa Maria, now live in Phoenix and named my oldest daughter (and business) Cambria.

Anyhow, it's too bad you won't be able to make it now. I've had to turn down some super awesome cakes that I would have loved to make due to logistics or being booked. But I'm sure something else just as FAB will come along soon!

This post reminded me of being asked for a wedding cake as a part gift/part paid contract for a friend. I was a single (divorced) mum at the time and needed all the pennies I could get - but nevertheless agreed knowing I would not make as much money because it would be heavily discounted . I made the cake - and the caterers stated it was the best cake they had served at this venue. So I was very proud. But imagine my pride turn to anger - when the 'friend' having only paid for the deposit - disappeared on honeymoon to USA (we are in London) and had a nice cruise, without paying me the balance. I had to remind at least 3 times and eventually the cheque turned up in a grubby envelope as though someone had stamped on it - about 3 months after the wedding. To say I was not pleased was an understatement. Anyway lesson learnt - alway always always get the balance for the cake before you deliver it to the venue on the day - no exceptions........even for 'friends'!!!!!

Cakecoach..sorry to hear that. It's difficult when friends don't have the ability to see beyond their own selves. If she had been a friend she would have not only paid you in a timely manner but would have tipped you for doing her the kind service of providing a lovely cake. It's not like she didn't know your situation. Not much of a friend.

And I met my husband in Santa Barbara, but he grew up in Arroyo Grande and Morro Bay. He used to work for Smith's Brothers Market when we moved back to AG after we got married. We drove up that winding highway all the way to San Francisco on our honeymoon.
We only moved to the valley because house prices were insane on the coast. Our favorite place to camp is North Beach down in Grover City.
I feel you homesickness. That part of California is beautiful.

Mommachris - maybe you could look around to find a cheap rental on a refrigerated van and see if she would pay that extra. A lot of places do by the hour, or half day rentals so you might be able to keep the cost down for her if you really wanted to do this cake for her.
