Need Help Covering A Rkt Ball With Fondant

Hello cakers!
I am making a giant hello kitty head out of RKT and then covering it in fondant. My previous experience making a round RKT and covering it in fondant didn't work out as well as I had planned. When I covered the ball and tried to connect the fondant on the bottom it wrinkled, gathered up and just looked plain terrible. I ended up covering the base with a border so you couldn't tell but I want to learn how to give it a smooth fondant base without having to cover up a mistake.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!
Hi,
Hello Kittys head is not exactly round but a lil oval. Have you tried to cover it in 2 parts? and have the seams meet in the middle and then smooth them out with a fondant smoother or a warm hand.I mean thats the only other way I can think to cover it without it looking bad or you having to cover anything up.

You ball would have wrinkled at the bottom because you had lifted it. Try keeping the ball on the table until you have almost smoothed to the bottom and them trim leaving just a small amount of fondant to work with. You will then be able to smooth is once you pick it up and join the fondant. Just make sure you work your fondant right down to the table first.

In my experience with trying to cover a cake that is smaller on the bottom than the top, it's better to use more fondant than you need. You have to be extremely patient and slowly work your way down but if you have more excess than normal it should be easier to achieve with less flaws around the bottom. If it doesn't work out, make fondant balls for a border and call it a necklace!
Makeitmemorable is correct. Be patient. work carefully down the ball Work it under. cut off excess cleanly and then with crisco on hands , just work it til it meets and work it a little more. I have used a little candy clay mixed wtih the fondant to make it more pliable. It helped me alot. good look. hth
Way Beyond Cakes by Mayen has a picture tutorial on Hello Kitty. She also covered it's head with RKT.
