Couldn't you just use cake crumbs? If not, what about pressing with a towel to get a granular texture?

I like the cake crumbs idea too. What about trying Brown Sugar crumbled up?

i know that some people imitate batter fried chicken using crushed up corn flakes. not sure if that's the look you're going for? but perhaps some other crushed cereal or cookies.
