I am looking to add a clay extruder to my collection of cake decorating tools.
Not knowing what to buy.
Does anyone have any advice on buying one? Or do you have one that you love using and mind sharing the name.
Thanks
I went on someone elses advice - I think it was on this site, saying that you can go to a large craft store and purchase one (usually with a 40 - 50% off certificate). The type they recommend was the screw-top type instead of the handpump. Your hand gets sore quickly with the trigger kind. My new screw-type extruder is still in the box but I will be using it soon. Hope this helps.
yes i agree the hand pump kills your hand after awhile and mine broke within 4 months of purchasing it.
i use the screw type and its much better.
i dont know the name of the brand, but i purchased it from globalsugarart

My ds gave me one for Christmas. $19.95 at Hobby Lobby - - it's a Wilton and they call it a Decorative Press Set. He kept looking for a "gun" and when he finally found it, he insisted it looks like a stapler. I've worked with it a little bit and it works well for what I need. My only problem with it is that it doesn't hold much fondant. I can only get a rope about 10" long. HTH
I bought a Walnut Hollow clay extruder at Michael's. It has a screw mechanism and about two to three times the capacity of the trigger one. I threw my old one away because no one should put their hand through what it required! I believe there is another one out there called a Makins.... it looks identical to the Walnut Hollow extruder.
When I'm extruding fondant, I soften it up alot by kneading in Crisco before I attempt to extrude.
I have a makin clay extruder (I found it online) it's fabulous and comes with lots of different ends. I use sugarpaste mixed with a little tylo and it works really well. HTH

I have this one and like it a lot. I wish it had a bigger barrel but it works nicely. Look for it in the polymar clay isle.
I also have the Makin screw extruder and it works magic. It is really easy to use with fondant in it. It is suppose to be use with clay, so you can easily imagine!
Go to polymer clay express (all one word and .com) and get a decent size gun. They are great and food safe. The ones at the hobby stores are not for professionals. They are too small and you have to fill them a billion times. I love the crown moulding type disks for my Extruder. http://www.polymerclayexpress.com/clay_extruder.htm
