I have done it several times. I will try to find a photo that shows the effects well in a picture.

The diamonds on this cake I used the luster/vodka mixture and painted it on. This is one of my earlier cakes, and I did not have my airbrush yet.

The masks are also painted with the mixture. The baby booties on top were sprayed with my airbrush, the effect was much more dramatic than the picture shows.

Yep, it is a paper towel. Do just like you would with a viva.

LOL, I know, I am sure I look like a goof walking up and down the aisles looking at the patterns. It really can add a lot to the cake.

For the OP's question I spray all off my cakes with a vodka and pearl sheen combo.
It cleans up the cornstarch and gives a nice subtle sparkle.

A paper towel? I've never heard of that before, do people request that?

Some have requested some sort of detail or impression on the cake, or have seen one of my cakes with it on and request it. But more often it is reserved for when I am given creative freedom.
