I've had a KitchenAid for about 10 yrs now and just started noticing some rough sounds after I've been using it a while (like about 10-15 minutes into making icing.) I was at Williams Sonoma a while back and checked out their mixers and a Breville caught my eye.

For $299, you get a 550W motor and the Breville comes with a scraper beater (like a beater blade). Those are normally around $30-$35.

A KitchenAid at the same price has a 325W motor and no beater blade.

Not that I'm not happy with my KitchenAid, it has served me VERY well for the past 10 yrs, but looking at the specs, I see more value with the Breville. If I had to buy a new one today, I would get the Breville. Even if it had the same motor as a KitchenAid, it would be nice to have a beater blade. I hear those cut your mixing time in half!

I have the Artisan KitchenAid with a metal bowl and I've been happy with it for 5 years now. They now have that same model with a glass bowl. I do use my bowl to put into boiling water, like for a double boiler, when I make Swiss Meringue buttercream. I've seen people put a blow torch to their metal bowls to warm up their Italian or Swiss Meringue when necessary.

Can you do that with the glass bowls? I can't find any information on KitchenAid's site with the temperature range for the glass bowls.

Does anyone have the new Kitchenaid 7 qt mixer - I think Williams-Sonoma has an exclusive on it for now. It is pretty big and strong, but pricey. Not sure how that compares to the other mixers tho.
