The closer in contact with the buttercream that the figure is going to come the more necessary it is that the figure have been made with gumpaste (or Tylose, etc.) mixed in with the fondant. I made fondant accessories all the time for my cakes and have learned this lesson the hard way. If the figure is added right before display and a short time before cutting, then it is less of an issue. It takes a bit of time for the buttercream to break down and soften the fondant. In order to give my self a bit extra time with the item on the cake, I also try to make my fondant creations days ahead of time so that they have plenty of time to air dry and get harder. HTH
