Suggestions, please -- 25-minute decorating demo

My church has asked me to be the "entertainment" at their upcoming Mother/Daughter Tea. They'd like me to do a 25-minute cake decorating demonstration. I'm excited, but don't know where to begin!!!

Should I show how to level, fill and frost a cake smoothly, how to assemble and fill a piping bag . . . or would it be better to just demonstrate different borders, writing, etc.?

I'm a fast talker and worker, so 25 minutes seems like a looooooong time to me!!

Oh, and I usually just work with buttercream, not fondant.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA!!!!

Since you're fast, give them both--butter cream and fondant. Show how to split, fill, crumb a cake. Then pull out an already iced cake--they will be bored watching that. Do a design that would be fun for a cake civilian to watch.

Bring out some fondant and add to that butter cream cake, or bring out another iced cake and decorate it in fondant. People are amazed with fondant--maybe show how to do a 5 minute simple fondant animal?

Or to add to what ddaigle said, maybe try your hand at a small fondant tea pot and cups/saucer to go with the tea theme. icon_smile.gif

Could you take it a step further and provide pre-iced cupcakes for everyone and then have tools out where you could walk them through how to add different decorations to the tops of the cupcakes? We did this for my wedding shower and the guests loved it! It was personal because it gave them a feel for my hobby and let them practice themselves.
