Please help! Calla Lily and stem

Hi

I am making 3 Call Lillies and want to know the best way to do the stems, I would like a thick stem as opposed to the thin wire - lillies will be on top of the cake, the stems tied with a ribbon.

I have followed tutorials and I am fairly happy with the flowers I make, but...................

I'm having numerous problems,

Base of lily keeps crumbling.
How do you get a neat looking base of flower, where flower joins stem
How do i get thick stems - tried kitchen towel around wire, it keeps falling off
Florists tape doesn't seem to stick

This is driving me to despair, please help!

Tape multiple wires together - the thickest you can get.
A straw covered in florists tape. The wire from the flower can be inside it. I have never tried this but it might work.

I agree - the first thing I thought of was "use a drinking straw".

Multiple wires taped roster with florist tape. The trick is to stretch the tape before applying it so the glue is released.

depending on the size you have made your calla lily you could attach the wire to a 1/4" thick dowel to create the stems, wrapping in floral tape.

I have used skewers that I had leftover from the summer barbecues. I used it on my vase cake because I wanted the flowers up high and thicker stem. I painted them green using gel color but you could use tape or even wrap it in green fondant.
