Hi all. Does anyone know how to bake a cake evenly, not have that bump in the middle. I hate having to cut so much off to level. Thank you.
P.S. It's an 8 inch square pan, 2inches deep
take a towel and cut it into strips. soak them in water and tie it around the pan. it works just as well as bake even strips for half the price!
Place a metal flower nail upside down into the center of your pan after you have filled the pan with batter.
I use the cut up towel method, or just plain old aluminum foil, doubled over, wrapped around the outside of the pan.
lisa, that is a new one! I will try and see with baking paper!
At the moment I use the push down method, But I am always afraid I will push too much and break the cake ( it has not happened yet) The push down method is as follow: this can only be done seconds after the cake is taken out of oven. Have a cloth and cake board same size as cake baked. Place the cloth on top of baked cake, cake board on top of cloth and press gently but firmly down and count to 15 and let go. so far I have not need to cut any of my cakes and this I have notice makes it a little denser. ( I only use cake mixes) I also always bake at 325.

I totally didn't know about the flower nail tip, but saw it in a tutorial about how to bake shapes into a cake. I can't wait to see the results if I try the flower nail method.
I saw on a baking show that you can also make a cross wise cut into the cake half-way through baking to let the steam escape.
