I'm doing a cake for someone that will be covered in black fondant. They don't want ganache, so should I use regular buttercream or chocolate buttercream?

I have used both under black fondant and usually leave it up to whoever the cake is for when I am using colored fondant because it doesn't show through. When I use white fondant, I definitely use white buttercream, but with colored, not necessarily.

I always use white buttercream unless someone requests chocolate. It really doesn't matter under black fondant, if you're afraid you'll have small holes to touch up, you can disguise those with a tiny bit of black icing color and a paintbrush.
