Ok, so I plan to make my friend who is an Amazing Race fanatic a b-day cake in 2 weeks. She is turning 50 and the cake needs to feed 40-50 people. Anyways, I have aspirations of making a globe cake sitting on top of a round base cake. I'm using a 10" pan for the base and an 8" ball pan for my globe.
My question is: what kind of support will I need to pull this off? Can the globe be stacked as any stacked cake or will it need a cake board between it's layers, then support between that board and the one on top of the base layer? Then run a dowel through the centre to anchor the two together? I have visions of the the bottom globe layer being crushed by the top, or the whole globe rolling off, lol!!!
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!

I just made a pokemon ball/bomb cake. I actually had to take it apart and add support. Once the fondant was applied it started to weigh down the cake and make it oval.
I added a cake board between the layers, and a few dowels for support. Worked perfectly. I suggest doweling through the whole cake also for stability.
Those little ball cakes can get pretty heavy, support it as much as you can.
I just stopped by to look for some help and I saw you are where I was last weekend. Had to offer what I did last weekend. I baked my sphere in a pyrex bowl and once trimmed and leveled, it was approximately 6.5 inches which did sit on a 10" base..
I hate to torte because its so much more work for me. I bake shallow and knowing the sphere was going to be fairly heavy (I did a pokemon ball and a pokemon character standing on top) I supported it the way you would any cake. I flattened the bottom of the sphere a little and cut my cake board to size. Using bobo tea straws for support, I placed 5 straws (1 centered) for support. I did opt to put a small extruded snake to stabilize since the cake needed to travel. I did not dowel and I was fine. I inserted a straw into the pokemon ball and a short skewer into the pikachu character made out of RKT. I inserted him when I got to the deliver spot.
Hope it helps...if not you can PM me. Sorry, I haven't posted pictures in quite a while. I fell so far behind. If you want, I can send pic from my cell if you supply email or MMS number. Good luck and have fun with it!
I put a buttercream globe cake as the top tier of a stacked cake (the teacher appreciation one in my gallery). I didn't put any support between the 2 halves of the globe. The sphere was on a cardboard base, so I just doweled the 2nd tier as usual, then set the globe on top. I did run a sharpened dowel down thru all 3 tiers and into the bottom cake board. I transported it stacked like that with no problem.
