I stayed up all night making each animal for the noahs ark cake just perfect. I put it in the back of my SUV (1st mistake) and drive nearly 20 minutes on bumpy highways and roads. I was gettting a bad feeling, having had cakes settle and shift during delivery before, but this was a REALLY bad feeling. I get out walk around to the back of the car, peer in the window and almost fell to the ground! The cake hadn't just fallen or shifted, it had completely fallen apart, looking as if it had been dropped on the ground (and kicked a few times). Because the cake was in the shape of a boat with a narrow bottom it didn't have the stability of an "average" cake. But the absolute worse part, it was for MY nephews 1st Birthday. I couldn't turn and run, I had to walk into my mother-in-laws with tears in my eyes and a mangled cake in my hands. Luckily I do "photo shoots" of my cakes so I showed them was it used to look like. 
I really feel for you. I had a similar disaster which I called my caketastrophe. I made my first wedding cake and had to transport it 50 mi. away. Looking back I think it fell as soon as I left the driveway. Upon arriving at the wedding and opening the tailgate I saw my three tier square cake in a heap. I was devastated and spent the next THREE hours trying to fix it. Luckily I had brought extra frosting and tools with me. About a third of it ended up in the garbage. The couple was very understanding but I never want to relive that again.
I'm so sorry! I think we've all had that one disaster and totally feel for you! I was literally sick to my stomach for 2 days! At least it was for your family who loves you anyway! I hope you cut it right away & I'm sure it was delicious! Hang in there!
My disaster was for a surprise party at the church for my mother who had been the pianist for 30 years. I made a 3 tiered black and white piano masterpiece! I was very proud of it but when we got to the church, it was in pieces. I knew my husband was slinging the car too much but he thought I was being silly. I cried so hard! Everyone at church just laughed at me for being emotional because I was pregnant. I started hacking away at the cake and putting it on plates before anyone could see what was left of the decorations.
Not that it really helps--but we have all been there! At least it was with people you love!! The cake sounds super cute, though!
OMG! I feel for you because I was in the same situation two years ago! I made a 3 foot tall wine barrel cake for my uncle's surprise 80th birthday. It looked great, we took lots of pictures, etc... It turned out to be extremely hot for October on the day of the party, we had to drive 40 minutes to the destination, uphill on bumpy roads and highways. I sat in the back seat with the cake, as we were driving I was getting very nervouse as I saw the cake shift, so I decided to try and hold it a bit, as time went on I felt my hand slowly start to enter the cake as the chocolate was melting. I was hysterical crying, finally got there, I also had an emergency kit with me, tried to fix it as best as I could. Placed the cake on the table, and went to sit down, my daughter kept going over to check that it was still standing. We noticed some kids jumping and running around the cake table, they were playing catch etc.. so i sent my daughter back over to check, she came back and went to tell her stepdad, instead of me, that the cake tilted over!!!! we rescued it enough to fee everyone and one layer so that my uncle could cut into it! I literally wanted to crawl in a hole. I also made sure that I showed everyone the pictures of what it really looked liked!
So i know exactly how you feel. Like the old saying goes we learn from our mistakes.....
