The ones I got from Micheals were found in the floral dept. They a called "floral stem wires" and I cover then with chocolate before I put then on my cake. They are not covered in paper. I havent use those before but i guess they would operate the same way.

But you cover them in chocolate before you push them into the shapes you use? Do you cover them in chocolate by dipping them? (I know I have a million questions...)

Yes, I dip the part of the wire that will come in contact with my cake that way the actual wires are not in contact with the cake. 9 times out of 10, the stars on yr cake that will have the wire attached will not be eaten BUT, if you think that they will be consumed then dip that part as well
