I'm a newbie to this so please excuse any of what you think are 'basic' questions *blush*...

I have an idea for my step son for a Motocross (MX) cake for his birthday. I was thinking of doing a rectangular sheet cake and build it up then cut a jump out on the left and some bumps the the back. I want the floor area, bumps/flats/jump etc to look like earth with sand (that's what it is in reality). What do you guys use as sand? The sand is pretty much that rich earthy clay colour. I know brown sugar can be used as sand but which brown sugar is best exactly. Also, I was wanting the sand to have more texture. I was thinking of blending some desiccated coconut to a finer but uneven texture, would that work instead or a mixture of both coconut and sugar for the sand? (colouring the coconut brown with brown colour gel).

I did want to add a Motocross figure on a MX bike too but I think that's a bit out of my skill set right now, lol. But I'm definitely doing some sugarpaste checks on the side of the cake and some hay bales on the cake too.

Would you recommend a sheet cake for this type of thing and anyone know of a great easy carve recipe? I'm hoping there's one here in the recipes section but recommendations would be great too.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. I did find one in google from this site I liked but the link doesn't work anymore so I can't show exactly.

As for he sugar, is the coconut do-able? Anything else to mix in the sugar to give it more texture? I don't want it being too sweet iykwim?

Thanks again.
