Hello all, this is my first post on this site. I have been lurking, reading lots and lots of posts and I do post on the Wilton site as well.

I'm making a two tier cake for a family party on the 21st. The base will be 10 inches round and 3 1/4 inches thick. The top will be 6inches round and the same thickness. I plan to crumb coat and cover in fondant, which color, I do not know yet. I'm trying to do a family theme, and doing fondant decorations, each persons favorite things. There will be a football, baseball, soccerball, Honda motorcycle logo, Harley logo, golf, paintbrushes, pencils, a castle, a dog (maltese I think), and a bunch of other things. I was going to also mold out the word "Family" with fondant, let it dry and place standing on top of the cake. I want to draw this out but I can't draw worth a lick. Does anyone have any advice or can someone help me with the design aspect of this? I would really appreciate it!

I understand - - I can't draw my way out of a wet paper bag.
I know several people have programs that will do this, but I'd be lost. I would go into the Templates gallery and find a sketch of the basic shape of the cake and print it and pencil in the designs.

That sounds like a lot on one cake, but it'll work, I'm sure.
1. leave yourself LOTS of time. If something isn't to your liking, you always have time to redo it.
2. Make as much as possible well ahead of time!
3. Use at least a 14" board so if it doesn't all fit on the cake you can include it around the board.
4. Sketches. They don't have to be beautiful, just serve your purpose. You may not be able to draw, but with some colored markers or pencils you can at least give yourself an idea of how things look together. A football...tan oval. Soccer ball...white circle, black spots Pencils...yellow narrow rectangles. It is just a guide for you. No one has to see it.

The computer can be a big help. If you are doing 3 inch tiers I am assuming you have a 3 inch pan rather than baking 2 1.5" layers. IF you do have the 3 inch pans, and don't think you can draw well enough to see your vision, print out little graphics to the actual size you need and cut them out. I have done this many times and sometimes have to print it then use the copier to enlarge or shrink many times until it is "just right". After cutting them out, color them with pencils if they are black/white drawings (clip art can be handy here) and tape them to your 2 inverted and stacked cake pans. Now play with it until you like it. Take lots of pictures with a digital camera and remove and SAVE those cut-outs. You don't want to be in the middle of decorating and find you've made some beautiful pieces that are really too big for the cake and no time to redo them. The cut-outs will help you scale your pieces when you are building them.

First off Alexsmommee great idea I have never thought of doing it like that. Gonna give it a try. Now for the post while I was reading all of this the only thing that popped into my head is a family tree. How cool would that be icon_smile.gif Good Luck

A family tree!! Why didn't I think of that?!?!?! That is an even better idea!! It would be so much less work and less of a hassle! I might have to try that instead!! I think with my idea I may have bitten off more then I can chew and I really don't think it would be worth the aggravation!
