Can you use flooding on cake/cupcakes?

I am making pull apart cupcakes....frosting them with buttercream as one....but then on top of the buttercream I am doing a design that is going to have stripes and patterns. I want it to look smooth and flawless....and was wondering if you could use flooding on the cake, if not what is the best way to decorate it - I haven't personally tried flooding before, so not sure if it dries too hard to be on top of cupcakes....but it looks like the perfect smooth texture I want to achieve....

Reposting to see if anyone has any advice for me...
I've never flooded-and not sure if the consistancy is too hard for pull-apart cupcakes.....

You can do a large buttercream transfer. I think there is a tutorial on this site that shows how to do this with cupcakes.

Below is a link to a picture of a cupcake cake (pull apart cupcakes) that I did for my great nephew. I used a FBCT for the Spiderman character. Would this idea work for you?

The spiderman is a FBCT like heysugar mentioned above. Here is a link to the tutorial here on CC.
