Cricut Cake Mini Or Regular Size

Hi everyone,
I am in an dilema and I hope that you guys can help me out. I am wanting to get a cricut cake but I am not sure whether to just get a mini or a regular size one. What are your thoughts?

I bought the Mini from Joann's last year for $99 with free shipping. I don't make a lot of cakes, so it has been ok for my needs. I just wish I could master the darn thing.

I regret my Cricut (which is collecting dust) and wish I got a Silhouette so I could use open source software to cut any image I want instead of having to use the Cricut's stupid expensive cartridges that are ugly and don't do a fraction of the stuff I wanted them to.
I agree with FromScratch. I have a cricut cake mini and I really, REALLY wish I would have known about the Silhouette. So so so so so much better and more versatile! It's on my down the road list.
But if you are determined to get a cricut, get the full size. It's easier to find the mats for them, and you can do larger size objects. The only benefit of the mini (other than slight cost), is the space it saves when not using it.
Is the silouette cutter food safe? I didnt see anything about that on the site, nor did I see that it would cut fondant, gumpaste, etc.? Did I miss it? Thanks

I have the cricut cake that I bought 3 months ago. I have only used SCAL with it. The firmware has not been upgraded to block the usage of 3 party programs. I did have to find an older version of the programs, but works great!!
How did you find an older version??? I can't tell you how many times I've looked...

I have both machines and the silhouette is the way to go. Cricut cartridges are expensive and you are limited to their designs. With the silhouette I can cut any design I want. Check out Linda's website and blog for recipes and instructions. As additional information the premium frosting sheets from icingimages cut like a dream.
What is SCAL? for the , I just got one.
SCAL is a program called "Sure Cuts A Lot". It was designed to work with a variety of die cutters, including the Cricut. However, Provo Craft (the makers of Cricut), were not happy about the program and attempted to sue the makers of SCAL and similar program (Make The Cut or MTC). They settled out of court. Now SCAL is no longer compatible with cricut machines, UNLESS you have one that the firmware has NOT been updated beyond 2.3 (no E2), and you have a version of SCAL that was available BEFORE the law suit (SCAL 2 is the latest that will work). I have seen it available on ebay for $300+.
SCAL and MTC are similar to the new Cricut Craftroom, except that you do not have to have cartridges, you can find SVG files online and import them into the program and cut straight from your computer. Without the option of 3rd party programs I find that the Cricut machines are worthless! The cost for the carts is CRAZY!! Should one of my Cricut machines break I would NOT buy another, but move on to another die cut machine that is compatible with 3rd party programs, like the silhouette.
