Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting, but I spend an obscene amount of my time looking at everyone's beautiful creations and I feel this may be the best place to ask these questions. I hope this is the correct board. Sorry this is going to be quite long, I'll try to shorten it:

Basically, my best friend in the whole world is having a major surgery that isn't going to be paid for by her health insurance and she's having a huge fundraising event, she needs to raise $30,000 and since I don't have the means to donate a HUGE amount of money, like she needs, I was thinking of donating a plethora of baked goods, sell them with 100% of the proceeds going to her surgery and enough baked goods to make AT LEAST $1000 for her. So I have a few questions.

1.) Would it be rude to ask if I could put out business cards? (Because I do want to eventually make money decorating cakes, cupcakes, etc but I don't know if this would be out of line though)

2.) I was thinking of making 500 cupcakes and sell them for $2. I know that's a bit much for just normal cupcakes, but do you think it would be okay since it IS for charity?

3.) I was also considering making 5 smaller cakes (about 6-7") and 5 pies and doing a cakewalk type of deal. I was considering making the raffle tickets for the cakewalk $10. Is that sufficient?

And I don't know if anyone has any other ideas or advice for me as to what to bake, what I need to do to set up, etc etc. I'd love to hear. I am sort of just jumping in here and I'd love any advice, even tough love, because I feel like you all have such great insight.

What a sweetie you are to help your friend like this. I wouldn't sell your cupcakes for $2, but more like for $2.50 or $3. Cupcakes cost an obscene amount of money nowadays and, as you say, it's for a good cause. I wouldn't hesitate to put out business cards - it doesn't seem rude to me at all. I'd also be sure to put out a great big sign or two saying that not only are all your profits going toward your friend's surgery, but you're donating the ingredients, too. I think this might inspire people to buy more of your baked goods. How many people would you expect to buy tickets to your raffles/cakewalks? If I were doing it, I think I'd try to shoot for taking in about twice the normal retail value of each cake or pie (not a discounted price, but what you'd pay in a good bakery). Divide that by the number of people you think might participate and you'll have a good idea of what each ticket should cost. You might want to think of making a few really spectacular things to auction off, as well (although I will confess I have no experience with these things. I really wish you good luck with this.
