I'm thinking about making cookies to take to my brother's wedding, which I will have to fly to. I checked TSA's website, and it does say that cakes and pies are fine, so I'm assuming cookies would be, too. Have any of you traveled with cookies? Do you have suggestions for packing them? I'm thinking I'd have close to 200 decorated sugar cookies, and I don't want them to break. Do you think I'd be able to pack that many in carry on baggage? I'm afraid to put them in checked baggage.

If you do decide to pack them in your checked luggage, I would pack the cookies as if I was mailing them. I mailed decorated cookies before and they were received undamaged. I recall recently a TSA worker removed someones cupcake because they considered the frosting on the cupcake to fall under the "liquid" category. This employee did not know what they were talking about. My point in mentioning this incident is you never know who you may encounter at the gate. After all of your work you don't want them to end up in the trash because someone didn't know their job.

Pack the cookies with the styrofoam peanuts or bubble wrap in a tin or a box from the post office. Surround the box with clothing to cushion it. I'm sure you'll need more than one box. HTH

I have packed them in my checked luggage before and they were perfect when I got to my destination. Now I'm only packing 2 dozen not 200! But I wrapped them individually in cello bags and layered them between paper towels in a tin cookie tin. I give them a good shake and if I hear them move I add more paper towel . I tape the tin closed put the tin in a ziplock and pack between my clothes.

I don't trust those TSA idiots not to confiscate them in a carry on, and if you wrap them so thoroughly as to keep those baggage handlers from crushing them, you're going to need another bag for your clothes! Once you are charged for additional checked bags, sometimes as much as $120, it may be cheaper and less hassle and safer to just mail them a couple days before you go!

Thank you, pummy and cookiemama2 for your responses! I think I will put them in my checked luggage so I don't have to worry about any part of them being mistaken as liquid. Also, I probably will need the space. I appreciate your suggestions on packing. I think it'll work!

Hahaha! Thanks, Annabakescakes! I need to do some calculating to figure out exactly how much space these things will take up and the costs of either mailing them or bringing them with me. Thanks for giving me more food for thought.

I think Annabakescakes is right about mailing them rather than putting them into your checked baggage.

I used to mail sugar cookies all the time before my grandma passed away, and the cookies never had a problem making the trip from TX to CA.

I flew with my friend's cookie favors in my carrying on. I put them in a box that they didn't shift in and put them in my super sized purse. The TSA agaents didn't have a problem and I felt better knowing there where I could see them as opposed to being checked in, where they can just toss your suitcase about. If you do check them in, I would seriously bubble wrap each one.

every time I fly, I have cookies with me in my carry-on luggage. I've never been stopped, never had to open them, never had even so much as a question about them - nothing... and yet I get practically cavity searched every time I go through security icon_smile.gif

Well, if you're flying Southwest (where bags fly free), then putting them in a checked suitcase is a good idea.

If you're flying a legacy airline where you'll pay for an extra checked bag.....................I think it would be cheaper to ship them by USPS, FedEx, or UPS.

200 cookies are going to weigh a lot with proper packaging. They might not even fit in the standard 22x9x14 carry on, anyway.

My ex husbands niece married a baggage handler that lived below us in our apartment complex (that's how they met) lol ANYWAYS... He told us that they had competitions to see who could bust open the bags by tossing them around. And if someone put a fragile tag on their luggage, they'd put it on the bottom and stack all the big stuff on top. It just isn't anything id want to chance. Unless it was Samsonite or American Tourister hard side luggage. I used to be an assistant manager there and we had a suitcase in the back that we'd pull out to jump on, lol. It sold them real good to show how durable they are. I'd still bubble wrap like it was my life at stake!

Thanks, everyone, for all the information. I'm starting to feel wary about putting them in checked baggage. I think I need to take some measurements and figure out exactly how much space these will take up. If I can't fit them in carry on, I think I will end up mailing them. Thanks again!

Just so you know my cookies weren't in my carry on. they were in my actual purse, under the seat in front of me.
