I'm making a cake similar to this for a mechanical engineer:
http://technabob.com/blog/2009/10/10/steampunk-wedding-cake/
and just needed some opinions.
I'm only making it 3 tiers of actual cake... so for the inbetween pieces would it be best to get a structure that allows space or maybe just put styrofoam in between layers because they can hold the support?
Also, I'm trying to figure out how to make the little doors that open... perhaps gumpaste on a vertical lollipop stick?
Any thoughts?

I'd use the styrofoam... they can support the weight, but you'll still need some additional support in key places.
Cake with supports or SPS legs,
Cake circle or SPS plate (to prevent supports from piercing into dummy above),
Dummy,
Cake on its own board, drum, or SPS plate with supports or SPS legs,

That's a brilliant idea... I think it would work great. Good luck.
For the doors that open, I would use the lollipop stick as you pin but I would make a "hinge" on the back of the door so that the door can move freely without taking a chance on breaking. Just look at the hinges on an ordinary door frame and youll get the idea....you probably dont need to make it as elaborate since it wont weigh that much but it will help with balancing the weight for a smoother opening and closing. Love the cake by the way, hope you show us the finished product~
