cupcake vs. cake recipes

I have noticed that many people on the CC recipe section ask if a cake recipe would be good for cupcakes. Is there a difference? I always use the same recipe and am wondering if I am doing something wrong icon_confused.gif

I use my same recipes too. I don't understand why it would need to be different...

I have a problem with the WASC recipe when it comes to cupcakes...they always come out way to airy (IDK if that is the correct term) but they are so light that there is almost no cupcake to enjoy if this makes sense...Its really weird!

WASC sucks for cupcakes. Cupcakes come out way too rubbery and airy. I think it has to do with the extra egg. I do a lot of gratis cakes, so I do use mixes occasionally. I have just started using a straight box mix for cupcakes and baking them at 350. I hate cupcakes so I don't feel like screwing with them that much. Everyone loves them when I do them without any extra stuff.

I have a lot of scratch recipes that don't do well as cupcakes. Some recipes are like that. If you check the scratch off thread (I think it's the one for the white cake) people talk about the cupcakes shrinking too much or not rising properly.

There's something about baking the batter in a smaller size with a comparatively large surface area against the pan.

It's just another reason why I hate cupcakes, LOL.
