I want to know too! I can avoid the cake. I do take a little taste of the part I trim off if it is a new recipe but my real downfall is the frosting. I can't stay out of the stuff and it is showing in all the wrong places!!!

I am in the same place as you with needing to loose some weight. It is hard when you make good cakes like we do to not want to eat some and I think it is ok to have a "sliver of a slice" once in awhile. I make sure that I have eaten something before I make a cake and then stick a piece of my favorite gum in my mouth
Good luck thumbs_up.gif

I am SO in on this one. I'm so terrible!!!! The cake scraps I can pretty much do without but I always have to taste my icing to make sure it's just right. I'm so bad. I'm still trying to lose all the "baby" weight from my 3 year old. I lost the weight from my 9 mo old but doing cakes is not helping with the other pounds.

Secrets secrets secrets??????!!!!!

That's what I do to avoid eating a huge slice of cake...make sure I've eaten a decent meal beforehand!! lol That way your less likely to want that much of it, or have the room for it in your tummy. Also, with me, if I take a taste of the batter or icing while making a cake, I really don't want any of the cake later on...weird, but that's how it works with me! Another trick I've found to combat those sweets cravings....drink an 8 oz glass of milk! I used to hate milk until I started having babies & when I'm pregnant I crave it! My DH would hear me get out of bed and get up to check on me...he'd find me in front of the fridge in all my pregnant gloriousness chugging milk straight from the jug!! lol icon_rolleyes.gif After this last pregnancy with my daughter, it kind of stuck with me to a certain degree. I've found that if I'm wanting ice cream or other goodies at night (the worst time to eat them!) then I'll go drink some milk and presto! I'm full and the craving just goes away.

I don't keep cakes in my house. Except for cake scraps which go straight in the deep freeze for future recipes. If I make a cake for a party I'm going to, I don't bring any home with me. If it's a party at my house, I send cake home with the guests. On the rare occasion there is some left, I actually throw it away. I'm probably going to hear it for that, but I had finally had enough. I like the feeling of fitting into my clothes more than eating a piece of cake. My theory is, it is just as much a waste to eat it when I don't need it. The only difference between my eating it and my throwing it away, is that when I eat it, I then have to then look at the results on my hips. icon_eek.gif (And it never looks as good on my hips as it did on the cake board!) icon_cry.gif I don't eat while I'm decorating. I brush my teeth before I start and the minty taste is a constant reminder that my mouth is clean. Besides nothing tastes good with toothpaste anyways. The gum is also a good idea. Who wants cake in their gum? icon_confused.gif

Well, you could go with the good old Canadian solution to everything, "Duct tape".
Seriously though, have a supply of raw veggies right beside you when you are baking or decorating. It will be a reminder that you are trying to eat healthy.

I've done the brushing the teeth thing with just any and all food in general and also gargling has worked. I brush and or gargle sometimes in the early evening to keep me from eating before I go to bed.

You know what will help... IF you remember to use it??? A FACE MASK!!!! LOL!!!!! Ya'll know I'm the world's worst at remembering to put a face mask on!! I'm still sick from a week ago when I didn't use it (powder sugar)! I do know it helps me from getting sick & from licking the icing & eating the batter! I love the batter more then anything!! I can't keep the spoon out of my mouth! I have gained 30 lbs since last Oct & I just realized it a few weeks ago!

We are all perfecting our recipes RIGHT!!! We have to taste???!!! NOT ME ANYMORE!!!!!

Good luck everyone at keeping your mouths shut!!!!!!

I'm disappointed in you ladies! icon_razz.gif No one mentioned EXERCISE!! Not the cake in the fork to the mouth kind mind you. icon_wink.gif I've gained ten pounds since doing cakes and am just now working to take it off. Not trying any low carb or crazy dieting techniques just eating LESS and watching my sugar intake. Lots of exercise walking/biking/running. I feel like I have to get back into shape or give up my cake hobby. Yes, I have no self control. icon_razz.gif It drives me crazy that my husband can eat 10 cheeseburgers, fries AND a chocolate shake and not gain weight.

my husband is the same way bikegal!!

I too have gained weight since I started baking, but today I am starting my exercise program back up!!!
It was awesome seeing this post today of all days - I guess it is a sign that I MUST start today.

I have done weight watchers - you can make your cake and eat it too on that diet!!!
Just save some points.

I chew gum while baking and icing my cakes to keep from eating any of it.

I put on a few pounds when I started too. Thankfully it's coming off now though. But the above poster is right, I do exercise a lot.

I'll have a glass of wine when I decorate too, and put on some music. That just doens't work well with frosting.

One of the that has helped NOT to taste my frosting/cake......I chew gum while decorating! And chew a piece of spearmint/cinnamon/peppermint b/c the taste of the gum does not go well w/icing/frosting.

Before I had my son....I had lost ove 60 lbs the old fashion way!! Exercise and very strict diet!! Now...I've got about 20lbs still from my son that I haven't lost b/c I'm lazy. One of these days I'll get back on track!

But the gum really helps me....or if I don't have gum...I brush my teeth right before I start.

I've put on a couple of pounds as well but I've been a member of a gym for about 5 years so that's helped me scare off the other pounds. LOL

A good thing for me is that I'm not an icing fan. I will try a teensy bit to make sure it's OK. And I will try a scrap of cake but I try...TRY..to be good. If I'm going to be at the place my cake will be, I will usually have a small piece, sans the icing.

I know y'all probably won't believe me, but I never taste icing or cake while I am decorating. I always feel like the person I am making the cake for or the health dept is spying on me and waiting for me to "stick my finger in it". SO, I am paranoid and just don't do it. LOL

I always want to taste my cakes to make sure they are edible. But I only take a small slice. I do taste the icing to make sure it is OK. But again, I just try to taste. Not eat! My downfall is cake balls. I love those!!

I throw cake away if it has been here for more than a couple of days. Otherwise I will feel like I have to eat it so it doesn't go to waste. My Irish grandmother you to say she had a "waste not waist". Well, I was doing the same thing. Eating everything on my plaste just so it wouldn't go to waste. Or eating the leftovers, whatever. Well, that put 60 pounds on me over the years. I have lost thirty and plan to continue to lose.

Before throwing it away, I send the cake to work with hubby or give it away to the neighbors But if I can't do that I throw it away and I don't feel bad about anymore.

That's funny! I feel that way too. I guess it comes for the health department classes and working in a bakery where I was in a glass booth in the front where everybody was watching me. The feeling stays when I make cakes at home. I always keep a damp rag near to wipe off any frosting that gets on my hands. It helps a lot.

I was afraid to get into a massive exercise routine or strict diet because at 40 - it's hard to commit to it for the rest of your life! My SIL lost a lot of weight with diet and exercise but now if she eats normally or doesn't exercise like crazy she puts it back on and then some. If you do it - your body gets used to it and needs what you're doing to maintain it.

It sounds like CakeCentral needs a group diet. How do we start one?

I, too have about 40 lbs to lose to be my marriage weight. Thanks goodness I'm 5' 11" and it only looks like an extra 20 on me! On the downside of that....even if I lose 15 pounds....my pants size stays the same! Not very encouraging!

Anyway....we are so supportive of one another...I think we can all do something together...it would have to be on the honor system, obviously.

I am a small person, but still have 10lbs of baby weight left to lose. I love cake and cookies! Since I've started baking, I do not buy any sweets. No cookie or candybar or ice cream. Nada! This way I can enjoy my creations without adding extra weight.

A big help for me was to make myself PAINFULLY aware of the correct portion size. It only took a few days of measuring my portions to realize how much extra food I was eating. I'd rather have a big slice of cake, than a cup extra of my dinner. Cake rules! icon_smile.gif

Also, we try to take family walks in the evenings. That was ok, but we just started practicing soccer with dd and that is much more fun. We all really have a good time and get a great workout.

I'm with Squirrelly on this one. I always have carrots beside me to munch on that way I won't be so tempted to eat what I'm making. I recently got to my goal weight of 102 lbs and then started decorating cakes so I don't want to gain any of it back.

I LOVE decorating cakes, but I don't really care for them that much. Now, the only one that I will LOVE to eat is the chocolate one. But, I don't make too many of those...

So, I don't have a problem with my cakes causing me to gain extra pounds... icon_lol.gificon_biggrin.gif

have a bottle of water beside you and make a point of finishing with each cake you decorate! So if you have to do 4 in one day then you will drink 4 bottles of water! Everytime you are tempted to eat the cake or try some icing...grab your bottle of water instead!

Bikegal is right! I have a degree in Health, PE, Recreation..................WHAT goes in the mouth isn't as crucial as the amount of exercise that occurs both before and after. LOL And the frosting " calls to me " also. LOLOL ALSO....many people believe that a good workout curbs the appetite....maybe we all need to work out before baking/decorating. How about duct tape while mixing up the cake.......workout while it's baking....and we're good to go during the decorating?????????? icon_biggrin.gif

ok I know that this has been said before but exercise even in the smallest amount will help. I have been dieting for a while now done good so fat lost 40lbs and have another 15 to go. While I do sample my icing and cake I do it in small moderation. I also chew gum to help while I'm decorating it does help either that or tic tacs. If I do break down and have a piece of cake then I adjust my eating to take it into account.

My problem is not the cake and icing(which I don't like at all and never taste) but the chips and salsa. Surely the is some help for that as well?
