Small Cakes For Bottom Tier Of A Wedding Cake?

My bride would like small cakes for the bottom tier of her wedding cake. I was thinking that 5 separate 6" cakes may work for the bottom tier. But, having never tried this options before, I'm worried about support for this type of cake... I use SPS but don't know that the stability would be provided with this system since the legs may not be stuck in cake? (Should there be a center cake as well?). Any advice you could offer would be great! Thanks so much.
CWR41 -Love the dummy idea! Let's just hope they all are all exactly the same height, huh? With dowels in the edges of your 6" cakes, do you transport this cake stacked?

Use extra cake circles to ensure that they are all the same height.
You can transport stacked (or semi-stacked) if they are on a plywood base... if they are on individual drums, they'll need to be assembled at the venue.
I would use SPS. I'd worry the dowels would shift when the larger cake is set on it, then all the small cakes would be crushed. But I have never done it ...maybe you could look through the forums to find a cake where that was done and ask the owner of the pic how it was done? I like the idea of a dummy in the middle. It would offer some support.

Four SPS legs won't fit into five satellite cakes. On top of that, none of the four legs would be stuck into cake. The center dummy couldn't be any larger than 3.5 inches, and the plate on top shouldn't be any larger than 8" if you want to see half of the 6" cakes below.
Depending on how many servings are required, you may need to rethink the design to six 6" satellite cakes to have more options with upper tier sizes. How many servings are needed?

There's a diagram on pages 30-32 in "A Treasury of Wilton Wedding Cakes" that shows the positioning of dowels towards the center/main cake in the base satellite cakes.

6" satellite cakes all around with a styrofoam dummy in the center. This was a very heavy cake but I had no problems with the stacking.
I use only PVC pipes (yes the ones used in plumbing. After all, your tap water runs thru them and we cook with and even drink tap water) for stacking. Just cut to size like a regular dowel. They MUST all be cut the exact same size, I cannot stress this enough! They are super strong and very inexpensive. But the styrofoam dummy is key for this design. I assembled it at the venue. I hope this helps!
