happy holidays everyone! I am in need of some tips. How do you add fine details without killing your hands? I'm adding small details to these curious george cookies that I'm working on, 210 to be exact, and using a #0 tip with 20 sec RI. I finished 50 so far and my hand is in PAIN! Some of my george looks like has a black eye because I had to thin out the RI a bit in the end. Getting so frustrated! Any suggestions would be appreciated. My hand can't take any more. Thanks!
I'm in the same boat as you did fine detail cookies for the bakery I work at for Christmas. All my insane idea. My hands...both wrists really hurt. I have concluded I need to have very small piping bag and just keep refilling... actually I think if I made up multiple small parchment bags of same colour and keep in sealed plastic container .. then just keep pulling them out. I think I put too much icing in bag at time and then squeese too much. I am going to buy wrist supports ( like tensure bandages, and wear them as I do cookies for Valentine's day. Perhaps adding extra support to wrist muscles before we abuse them will help.
For all of you who work the cake/bakery industry a very Merry Christmas and if you are like me you are happy that the season's work is almost over. You put in long hard hours to make people happy.
when i do alot of piping I usually put on wrist supports. Just a thin ace bandage does wonders! HTH
Yes, I bought a wrist support, but didn't get a chance to use it yet. When I knead, color or roll fondant, I use a step stool, so I'm OVER it, then I use my body and not my wrist strength (Sugarshack's tip). I find it really saved my wrists! Maybe that will help....Thinner RI helps too!
OUCH I feel your pain! As Sewsugarqueen mentioned, I use a very small amount of detail icing and refill as needed too.
Bat your eyelashes at your DH and see if you can get a hand massage. Works wonders when my hubby does that for me. Doesn't prevent pain, but helps afterward!
Thanks for all your suggestions!! I went and picked up a brace. It helped. I ended up painting on the details with gel paste. I had the best results with that. The cookie is in my gallery if you want to take a look. As for my DH massaging my hand... I got a big NO.
My son's hand therapist told me to keep stretching my fingers back to loosen up my hands when I'm icing alot of cookies. also, heat will relieve the soreness- an added excuse for a coffee break every now and then!
