How does everyone make perfectly even balls around their cake bottom? Is there a mold, or a special way of rolling them out that I'm missing?

If you are making your own, you could do like I do. I use my pasta roller, roll my fondant out then I use one of my round icing tips to cut circles out. This makes them consistent in size. You just have to roll them in the palm of your hand carefully. The fast way, get a first impression pearl mold and make them.

Roll the fondant out with a rolling pin guide, or dowels so that the thickness is even. Then cut out circles all the same size and roll those into balls. You my need to cut the circles in 1/2 to get the size balls you want, but they will all be the same size!

Good luck

Mine are never even...if I'm going for cute and whimsical I like them all kind of different. If I want elegant I use the pearl molds but I only have the medium size.

I used to cut the circles and roll...that works great. But I'm kinda lazy when it comes to borders so I now have one of the 1st Impressions bead molds. Works great too and saves me time. thumbs_up.gif

I've used a measuring spoon in the past....1/2 tsp. I believe...pushed fondant in, rubbed my thumb around the edge of the spoon to get rid of any excess, then popped it out and rolled it into a ball.

I know this isn't the answer to your question, but even though I have made fondant balls, I prefer to use small coated candies (the kind they sell by the bag in different colors and pearlized) at places like Party City. They're already evenly-sized and people actually like eating them! I used the candies in my zebra cake, for example. Good luck!

It's funny that these ideas never occured to me before as I sat there tearing uneven pieces of fondant and rolling them out over and over and then trying to pick the most even looking ones.........then trying to add more or take away from the bad looking ones......oh jeez- I wish I found this site 4 months ago -when I started decorating cakes icon_smile.gif
Thanks everyone!

I also use the candy balls as a previous posted said. Also for a more whimsical look or a kids cake, I use the gum balls too.
