I'll be making a small (10-8-6) tiered wedding cake next month and was looking around for a 12" metal stand - just 2-3" tall, no stem (the kind that basically looks like a cake pan - only fancier! ) I've seen them on Amazon and ebay, but there's no way I'm paying that much! I keep thinking that there must be some way to make something like this... but I'm drawing blanks. Any suggestions?

Could you rent one? We have an event rental place that rents them.

I've never thought about renting... I'm not sure who does it around here, but it's something to look into!

I found a couple silver engraved cake stands at Marshalls for around $25 . If you have a Marshalls / Homegoods in your area it's worth a check, I have come across some great / unique cake stands there.

Hobby Lobby has a 14" metal cake pedestal for $50 regular price that goes on sale for 50% off.

Also check out wild orchid quilts dot net. You don't have to pay S & H on most of their items. I just ordered a white ceramic pedestal stand for $32. I used it this past weekend under a 3-tiered wedding cake and was very pleased with it. The photo is in my gallery.

Have you completely decided on the silver cake stands? Because what I usually do is just buy a styrofoam dummy (I always order from dallas foam. You'll probably want about a 13" x 4" for the cake you are making), 1 or 2 yards of fabric (matching color to the theme of the wedding, satin usually looks best, and use a 50% off coupon from Michaels or Joannes) and throw the fabric over the styrofoam dummy and tuck in the sides.

It makes the perfect cake stand. It's disposable (no worries about returning an expensive rental cake stand) and very inexpensive. (About $15 total)... and it looks nice and elegant.

Thanks Crystal, that's an idea. I still have some time, so I haven't decided for sure yet. I did pick up a gold glass pedestal stand from TJMaxx, but I'm not really sure I want it on that pedestal. I'd really rather have it straight down. I'm now dreaming about putting a small castle on top since that's what's on her invitation (I have free reign) so I do NOT want anything remotely tippy.

Although that castle is yet to be determined. I know I can make decent roses, but I've never done anything as complicated as a castle.... but it would be so perfect for this wedding. I still have some play time, thankfully, but it's getting closer.

If you are short on time or money, have you thought about making one? I made the white one in my gallery...the one with a square wedding cake on it. It was just some crown molding and masonite, painted white. It had a 14 inch top and cost me about $30 to make, and maybe an hour of my time (if that) including my painting time. I like having different sizes and shapes for the stands. This is my only white one, and i love it!

I did think about making one - just don't want it to look made.... the crown molding idea is a good one though! I suppose I could use a square base with round cake. I could fill the corners in with flowers mabye...

I put round cakes on square stands all the time. The brides often choose which stand of mine they want to use and i use square ones all the time, although i've only had one wedding cake which was square itself. It really did not look homemade at all. You can see it in my gallery. The stand is the only white one. There is a square wedding cake on it with black ribbon and a silver heart topper.

Wow - that really looks nice! I wonder if I could get dh to try that.... he doesn't have a chop saw though so I wonder if it would come out as nice. Hmmm... he does have a friend with one though... I could even spray paint it a metallic silver....

Oh I forgot. You can order styrofoam wedding cake stands from Winbecker. They are already covered in embossed aluminum. They are very reasonably priced.
