I have been following the Cricut Cake rise and fall with great interest. A machine that was to change the cake world starts out at $400 and in less then 18 months is on sale through the company that made it for $49.00. There has been very little support from the makers of the Cricut Cake, and the additional products that were promised, like food color markers, have not been produced. It appears the maker of the Cricut Cake machine will sell out and not continue with it. I do have a Cricut Cake along with another machine I use and was fortunate enough to get it early so I could use Make the Cut software with it. To those considering a Cricut Cake machine, get it now while you can. Remember that it may be cheap, but the cartridges with the designs are not. If you have a collection of cartridges, then this is a good deal. Also, the Cricut cake machine can be used for scrapbooking. Just get the other blade housing unit.

I also own a cricut cake. I love it. I don't buy the cartridges, and I don't use their frosting sheets. I use Satin Ice fondant and I create my own designs and have Sure Cuts A Lot cut them for me. A lot of people ask me how I get the Satin Ice to cut on the Cricut Cake...simple. I just roll out the Satin Ice fondant onto my Cricut Cake mat and freeze it for 2 hours. I've done so many cakes where I cut the pieces out with the Cricut Cake it saves a lot of time. Of course, it helps if you know how to design graphics, or to take a picture and create a template from it. I use a combination of Adobe Photoshop to create my graphics and then I use Sure Cuts A Lot to trace the graphics I made in Photoshop and cut away!

This cake, I used this really awesome Zebra print that I converted from a graphic from the web, into a JPG in Photoshop, then took it into Sure Cuts A Lot to cut it.

Donpiper your cricut cakes are awesome. I have both the cricut cake and the silhouette. I also have make the cut and sure cuts a lot. I have cut images out on both using fondant without too many problems. Unfortunatly I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get a, say, a scroll design that I found on the web into my programs. This old brain cannot understand jpeg's svg's and such. Someday.......

Must one use commercially prepared fondant with the ? I use only MMF or MFF and do not have commercial brands available. I want to order the , but not if it won't work for me.

I have used my cricut with both MMF, and satin ice fondant - you can get online or if you have a bake shop they might carry it - i think i've even seen it at walmart or michaels.
Anyway I found both worked fine as long as the mat is greased, the fondant rolled thin and then frozen.I also found that freezing it before peeling it off the mat helps in case the fondant has softened too much. If you are going to be making cakes for others that require more intricate designs and you don't have the time or skill to free hand (like myself) then it is worth it, especially if you are able to use the sure cuts a lot with it.
Does anybody know if that is still available? I had a question about it once and couldn't find a site for it. might just have had the wrong url.
Thank you, cakemomof2! I appreciate the info. I don't buy fondant online because the shipping is too high to my FPO address and there are no suppliers where I live. I really like both the MMF and MFF fortunately so if I can get all the ingredients for one of them I'm good. Sometimes it's toss up, too!

Is there any way to get SCAL2 anymore? I have a cricut, planned on buying the software, never did and I don't know if you can. I rarely use my cricut, it collects dust most of the time. But I am irritated I missed the chance to actually USE it like I want.
I have SCAL2 and it won't work at all. It started out working, but now it keeps locking up and I can't get ANYTHING out of it. Can't figure out why. Down to cartridges now.
If you updated your software or cricut it will no longer work. If you haven't updated your cricut and have the original SCAL2 disc you can uninstall the update and reload the original version and it should work.

I still have Sure Cuts A Lot, but I sold my Cricut Cake machine when I "thought" I was done doing cakes....but now I am getting back into it.
There are other ways of doing the same thing, small CNC machines can be purchased, and even purchased cheaper as a kit, and then used to cut the same way. I haven't decided on what I want to do yet, as I am still weighing out my options as I re-obtain all of the cake decorating tools, pans, etc. Man, I wish I wouldn't have sold all that stuff off.......but I thought I could just turn off that artistic part of my brain....I was wrong.
