Canned Frosting

Does canned frosting crust? Do I have to mix it with something like powdered sugar, buttercream frosting, or...? Thanks! icon_smile.gif

Grocery store brands are not meant for decorating (i.e. Duncan Hines, Betty Crocker, etc.). Your best option is to use a crusting recipe (Indy Debi's, Sugarshak are 2 popular crusting recipes listed on this site). If you would rather buy icing, you need to purchase premade icing meant for decorating, Wilton sells this at craft stores and Sam's sells large buckets (32lbs) of But-R-Creme. HTH.

I have found that if you heat canned frosting (for pouring, etc.) and let it cool, it will then crust. Learned this during my candy-making days. However, while I will use a doctored mix, I won't use canned frosting on a cake - gag! Take the time to mix your own frosting and you'll be much happier with it.

Canned frosting is good for putting in the fridge and eating cold with a spoon, lol (esp Betty Crocker Milk Chocolate). Otherwise, I make my own frosting for actual cakes.

I agree with Chelle, Canned frosting is great to eat with a spoon.
What I want to know if how to stay out of all frosting. I love it all and the buttercream and cream cheese are the best (homemade of course ). sure doesnt' help out the ole diet

I don't know how some of you stay out of this stuff. I 've lost 115 lbs but now love to decorate and it's a killer.
I know this is off the subject but the eating frosting with a spoon got me. icon_biggrin.gif
anyone have any suggestions or advice it's most welcome

My only advice is you'll eventually get sick of the icing, lol. I now prefer cake with no icing - I know it sounds crazy!

I also have mixed canned icing into my homemade (mostly for cream cheese icing without real cream cheese). I'll also mix it and use it as filling in the cake. I do love the taste of canned frosting, and also love the taste of my own homemade frosting.

Well unfortunately I don't do cakes real often.Although I was told I was to be corrected ... I'm not just a hobby baker if I make 3 tier cakes. lol
Too much time span in between making cakes to get tired of it I guess. icon_cry.gif lol

Oh good Lord, how can you guys eat that stuff? It taste like spackle with some sugar in it! That's what it would be good for, too, spackling things. I need the barfing emoticon here, nothing else works.

I don't seem to have this problem, although I've never been a taster. I'll taste something to make sure it's what I want to give a customer, but other than that I don't. At this point, given the choice, I don't opt for cake for dessert.
