I have never had any luck with any of the levelers anyway (not counting the agbay of course which is out of my league). I typically do the toothpick technique or the knife scoring with a ruler. I have also used unwaxed dental floss, but in combination with the toothpicks to make sure it didn't slip. I was amazed at how well it worked. If you don't have a knife longer than your cake layer, I suggest going with the dental floss.
