Hi everyone!
Im new to this website and im a complete amateur! ive had a look at some of the galleries and posts, and wow! can you guys decorate cakes! [apologies for the overuse of exclamation marks} i just wanted to contribute an idea that i do sometimes. i make miniature cupcakes, decorate them with white icing and flowers, but them i put them in an egg box, one per hole. they are great for christmas/easter/birthday gifts. i dont know wether this is a very old idea that everyone knows or whether it is not very well known. Anyhow, i look forward to exploring the forum more throughly and learning how to make beautiful baked goods! icon_smile.gif

Oh wow. The second I read the title of your post my brain went "duh! for the minis!!! why didnt I think of that?!?!" I make tons of cupcakes and HATE trying to transport them. That is a fantastic idea! Welcome and thanks for sharing!!! (I like the exclamation points!!!)

I've seen this done before and it's cute. My only concern is: clean, sanitized egg cartons, please ; )

I'm with bakingpw, I have read that egg shells are a source of contamination to eggs, so I would think that egg cartons would not be safe to transport food items in. The ones that I always get are cardboard so there is no way to clean or sanitize them. I guess you could wash styrofoam ones. Neat concept though.

You can order new ones from literally dozens online. A simple google search will show you lots of choices. Used egg cartons? Yuch.

The shell does carry many of the unsafe issues. I don't think you can wash it off. Only pasteurization kills it. So they are not safe. The unused ones would be fine. And be aware that very young and very old people are the most succeptible. The carton would be exposing them to the live contaminates, which we never do in a baked product. Plus the cartons are not refrigerated which may retard the contaminates. All of this information can be found on the egg board. It gives all issues and prevention on a gov/scientific site.

Hey, guess what? A bakery in Mass only a few months ago gave someone a cannoli that KILLED the man. Why? They were storing the cannoli shells on old egg cartons. Nuff said. Buy new ones, your customers DESERVE it.

I would have to agree that it may not be safe. I've wanted to try the "broken egg cupcakes" in Hello Cupcake book. However, the carton thing has kept me from it. I've not had a chance to find new ones...yet!

I was completely unaware of this. I've reused the styrofoam cartons, after I washed them with soapy water of course, as flower formers. Thankfully no one has gotten sick so far, but I will definitely be throwing them away and looking for new ones. Thank you for this post!

I worked in a bakery...A light mist of a mixture of water and bleach, just as you would sanitize your baking tools and counters. Mist egg cartons lightly inside and out let dry, repeat...light mist......and whala, one sanitized egg carton. Bleach sanitizes, and sterilizes....and doesn't harm the egg carton or the cupcakes. Once it is dry, it is gone....I love the idea of recycling....I am glad and I appreciate the post, thank you. icon_smile.gif

Becca, I don't think the FDA/HD would agree. It must be pasteurized.

I make mini cupcakes in egg cartons all the time, and they are super cute. But, I buy the cartons on line and in a cake decoration store. Eggs have never been in them, so they are food safe.
