I'm aware this may be insane, but I wondered if anyone had ever tried it, lol.

I'm making a dinosaur-themed cake for my son's birthday (actually, three cakes), and while planning it out, I was trying to think of accents I could make out of fondant. I thought of dinosaur bones, but they would have to be ridiculously-tiny, or else look wildly out of proportion, laying around beside the dinosaur figures I'd already gotten for the cakes.

Then I wondered, what if I made small fondant bones, and hid them INSIDE the cakes - like baking them in? That way, the out-of-proportion size (1 inch bones compared to 2-3 inch dinosaurs) wouldn't be as obvious, and I know the kids would love finding several "fossils" hidden inside the cake.

But would that even work? What would happen to the dried fondant pieces, when floated in cake batter - would they just bake harder into bland little candies, or would they possibly melt first?

Has anyone ever tried anything this crazy, with fondant? icon_rolleyes.gif

Didn't try to bake them inside - think they would melt. I've hidden them in the cake after it was baked and filled, prior to crumb coating. Thought the best spot would be the corners (it was a rectangle cake) as there was less probability they would be cut in half and I was not cutting the cake.

I don't think baking them in would work. All you have to do is use a drinking straw or bubble tea straw to "core" out a section of the cake. You can go pretty deep with a straw. Drop the bone in and replace the plug of cake.

They would definitely melt inside if baked ....fondant can not stand up to heat and the bones would turn to mush inside the cake and not hold their shape...

Here is a cute idea if you are giving the party ....go to the butcher and buy some large thigh bones and other misc bones and make a sand box and let the kids dig for dinosaur bones...they will love this ! I know someone who did this...the lil guys thought it was amazing....and that way there is still a way they can dig for bones! Good luck!
