My kitchen table is tiled. I usually try to roll on my counters, but it is difficult rolling the fondant out large enough. I have been brainstorming about a "mobile flat space". Does anyone else have this problem or any ideas? Something I could maybe store in the garage that is stable but not too terribly expensive? Thank y'all so much for your help.

I have a quadruple-sized cutting board that I use occasionally - my counter tops are tiled. They make "islands on wheels", usually for apartments or small kitchens. You might check on one of those.

How about a piece of plywood the same size as the top of your kitchen table? Places that install countertops usually have scrap pieces of Formica that you could glue to the plywood. Depending on the size of your table, it might be a little heavy, but that would keep it in place. Maybe you have someone who could help you move it.

MDF (medium-density fiberboard) would be lighter weight and you could cover it (both sides) in Contact-type paper (sticky-back plastic). Then a couple of pieces of that rubber/plastic bumpy drawer liner would keep it in place.

Just my 2 cents.

How big of an area do you need? I have a 24x24" piece of oak plywood I use for a cake board (covered) sometimes, and I also have The Mat from Sweetwise. If I needed more space due to messy counters I use those on my table.

This is a problem I have too with no solution so far. My counters are tile and the kitchen table has design.....it's frustrating. Curious too see what others have done.

What about a card table with "the mat" on it? Folds up nice and stores well.

You could buy a scap piece of quartz or other counter top material. I usually roll on my glasstop stove, I need to find somewhere else because I just can't get into it with the microwave/hood. The other spot that is easy to get to is on top of the dishwasher. It can be rather warm if it is running.

Her kitchen table has a tiled top. With grout lines, I assume, so it isn't flat.

Before I purchase a stainless steel work table, I used a formica table top (36" by 36") that I picked up at Restaurant supply store. Didn't buy the base - just the top. Just checked the price - they are $38.50 at the restaurant supply store where I purchased mine. What I like about it, is the edges are finished - so if you have place, you could slide it into a upright space (like beside the refrigerator.)

Thank you all so much! Great ideas. I borrowed a card table from a friend. I was a little worried rollling fondant with the pillowy top. We shall see how it goes. For future cakes, I am definitely going to the restaurant supply store that just opened in my area! The formica table top sounds perfect! 3 feet x 3 feet would be perfect to store beside the refrigerator. That is much easier to access than the garage!

Hi Occther, Do you have a link or picture of that formica table top? I have a very small kitchen table and small counter. Also thank you to everyone else for giving me some ideas icon_biggrin.gif

They only have a picture of the round one on their website. I would think any large restaurant equipment store would have similar products. You want to find a place the sells table parts (bases and tops separate.)

I had the same problem. I purchased a 20 x 20 smooth tile from Home Depot for about $3. I glued shelf liner to the back of it from the dollar store so it wont scratch my table top. When not in use, it sits in the corner of my countertop with a bowl of fruit on top.

A 20" by 20" square wouldn't work for covering an 18" tier - and I have done several of those!
