Went to dr yesterday and confirmed I have strep, the cake is baked and filled and I planned on carving, icing and finishing it today and tomorrow...should I keep going? Hubby said, "maybe you shouldn't breathe on the cake!" LOL I need advice please. What would you do?

could you get someone else to do it? if not maybe get one of those masks that covers your nose and mouth? I feel that step is not like a tummy bug that is easily transmitted, so if you can prevent from breathing on the cake and wash you hands regularly, maybe do it.

I am sorry you are sick. I had it once, it was the worse thing i ever encountered. Hope you feel better soon. Do you know anyone that could help you finish it. If not. Just take great precautions. Good Luck!!!!

Once you have been on antibiotics for 24 hr you aren't contagious any longer. I would still wear a mask and gloves with good hand hygiene.

I think the more important question is when was the cake baked and filled? If you are pulling it from the freezer AFTER you are no longer contagious (and wearing mask and gloves) that is fine but if you baked and filled the cakes the day before the Dr told you you had strep I think the cakes need to be tossed!

If you were making a cake for your family its your call but if this is for a paying customer you can NOT deliver a cake that was handled while you were highly contagious with Strep!

I came down with the Norovirus on a Thursday. A friend had ordered a cake for a Sunday pick-up. While I was feeling good enough to do the cake on Saturday, I read that I would be contagious for another four days. I called my friend and told her the story and let her decide if the cake was that important to her to take the risk of me doing it. (The media had done a good job of broadcasting the Norovirus epidemic that hit my sons school, so she knew all about it!) She wisely said no, and thanked me for letting her know the situation.

I'm guessing your client would rather scramble and find another baker than take the risk of not only getting sick, but possibly getting all her guests sick!

While Strep is contagious, it is spread through direct contact. ie: sharing cups, cutlery, kissing. As I doubt your going to lick the cake, your fine with a mask and gloves.

Hope you feel better soon. I used to get this every year all through my teens. Hated it. But no-one ever got sick from me, and I did all the baking and cooking in my house.

I am a microbiologist by trade. Cakes are a hobby for me. Speaking from this aspect, at the very least you want to wear gloves and a mask. While strep is usually transmitted via direct contact, it can also be spread via airborne methods (coughing, sneezing, talking, laughing, etc...). And while you may not be highly contagious after 24 hours of abx, you can still transmit it fo up to 72 hours after abx (although you are much less likely to do so).

I agree that if the cake was freshly baked while you were symptomatic, or just before you became symptomatic, you probably want to consider rebaking or at the very least informing your customer. HTH!

Thank you ladies! I did tell my friend I was sick jsut to give her a heads up and gave her the option of what to do. She's going to get a sheet cake from Costco instead...I feel better about that too! I would hate to make anyone sick. I baked the cakes on Tues, found out I was sick on Wed. so you never know...thanks for the advice!
