I have just recently started decorating cakes on the side and am really enjoying it, but my fondant seems to look dusty from the powdered sugar. How do I fix this? Any tips are EXTREMELY helpful!
You can rub shortening over your fondant to bring back. Wipe off the excess with a paper towel, the rest will absorb into the fondant.
Works great!
If you don't have a steamer I us clear extracts or some people use vadka ( I cannot put liquer on a kids birthday cake ) I don't think it does anything I know several people do but just seems wrong to me!
I have a small paintbrush that is used for Vodka only - and I simply brush the dust away. It evaporates and leaves 0 vodka behind.
I used to use sugar to dust the surface, and use steam or vodka to brush it off to decorate until I found Demarle products. I love them so much I started selling them, I'm not kidding. I did a car cake the first time I used the roul'pat mat and I was AMAZED, it cut my work time by at least 50%. It is a silicone surface so it is cmpletely non-stick. I use it for everything, now. I never have to use added sugar to roll things out. I just lift the mat to cover the cake and peel it off easily. It's amazing stuff. The time it saves me is incredible, less clean-up of fondant, work surface, etc. I go straight to decorating. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. They come in several sizes. Contact me if you want more info on the mats...same company that makes sil'pat.
Agree with DKW cakes, I have started using sweet wise mat here in Australia and I've never had to face that problem again. Don't get lint on my fondant and no dirty looking fondant either. Besides, I feel like it gives a nice shine to my fondant.
I too roll out using powdered sugar - however I plan on buying a mat if I can get one when I vacation in Florida next month (I am British). To make my cakes dust free, what I try to do is "polish" the fondant with my hand, before I transfer it to the cake. So I roll out my fondant to the size I need, then rub it with my hands until the dust is gone and it takes on a nice shine as well. Its been working for me so far! lol
Ateco also makes a great, inexpensive mat that you can use with oil spray and have no dust to deal with - your fondant won't dry out as fast either.
