Hello, my friend has asked if I can make her a cake for her son's Birthday and would love it to be in the shape of Mickey's head. I've just had a look online and it seems most are made by making 3 cakes - two small and one large but there are only going to be about ten of us eating the cake which means there would be far more cake than she wanted.

Has anybody made a cake like this and is able to advise the best way of doing it (especially with it not being a huge cake?)??

Thank you!

Unless you plan on giving this as a present - NO $$ changing hands at all!- it illegal to make Mickey.

If you still plan on doing it make a 6" or 8" single layer round for the head and cupcakes OR cookies for the ears.

You could make a template to fit on top of an 8" cake in the shape of Mickey's head, then carve away the extra cake to the correct shape.

It's going to be instead of a present so there isn't a money issue. Thanks for your advice, I was thinking instead of using cookies or cupcakes could I model the ears from rice krispie treats (I haven't used them before though so not sure what to use them for!)?

You can make a 6" round for the face and use 3 or 4" cake pans for the ears.
(Or you can just cut appropriately sized rounds from a larger cake...)

I would use a small ball cake pan, then do the ears and facial details out of fondant - more of a 3D style. I have done similar with Angry Birds as a present and it looked great without having too much cake!

Recently, in place of small ears, wheels or other round shapes, I have used fondant covered RingDing cakes. I used it as panda's ears and wheels on a Mini Cooper in my gallery. If its the right size for Mickey's head, you can cover them with black fondant and cut the bottom of each to form the curve to fit the head. It's smoother than dealing with the RKT, or at least, for me! Good luck!

I would just make a sheet cake and use a template to cut out the shape. Then cover it in fondant.

Sure icon_smile.gif You can use anything/medium you can form that is edible, of course.

I made a minnie cake for my daughters birthday(see my pictures) and I just used a 10 inch round for the face and 2 6inch rounds for the ears, just carved a little off the 6 inch rounds to "fit" the ears to the round face. Covered with buttercream and used fondant for the ears. I traced the face on parchment paper from a photo of minnie and used them as stencils and used fondant(eyes, nose and mouth). For Mickey, just omit the bow on the head and the polka dots on the side.

I was a large cake, however, who doesn't like yummy leftover cake icon_wink.gif

ETA Here is the picture of the one I did. For Micky, no bow, no eyelashes, lol

Thanks again for your replies, that face template is great - thanks JanH.

I love that Minnie Mouse cake, and will use your method of tracing the face I think and will check with my friend if she'd rather have the ears out of cake or rkt - if it was up to me I'd just have extra cake or serve bigger portions! Thanks again for all your help, it doesn't seem so scary now!
