I am sure this has been answered before...I just can't find it this morning!

Can you use regular Wilton gel coloring in candy melts??

I am making cake pops and running out of the colored melts.

Thanks!!

I only use the colors for candy. My attempt at using icing colors was a disaster.

Candy melts/chocolate are oil-based and regular gel colors are water-based. Adding regular gel colors will cause the melts the "seize" which will make the candy melts lumpy and unworkable.

i have used regular white chocolate and coloured that with regular wilton paste colours and it was fine, the cake pops in my pics were coloured this way no problem with the chocolate splitting. hth

I've used water-based color 2 ways with my modeling chocolate: 1-added to the light corn syrup before mixing with the chocolate; 2-put directly on modeling chocolate after it was made and kneaded it in.
Both worked fine for me.

Thanks all for your thoughts!

I may take a little bit and add a little of the gel and see what happens.

I just add a little vegetable oil to the water based colors and it works perfect. Good Luck!!

if you mixed a water based colorant into oil, it would make sense that you'd color the oil, but the water could be allowed to evaporate, right?

I just would like to add that I just tried to color wilton pink candy melts with a tsp of oil mixed with an americolor water based color and it seized up. Just wanted to let you know.

I don't suggest it...it will ruin the consistency.

There is a product called Flo-Coat from Americolor that is an additive so that you can use gel colors with chocolate.
