How do I recreate the wings of this picture with all of the fine details onto a gumpaste crown? Had to make picture smaller in order to fit on crown and it was really difficult trying to recreate wings. What is the best way/method to recreate the wings?

Where will the final placement of the wings be? Will there be cake underneath to support it will will it have to stand on it's own? Either way, I would probably make it from gumpaste.

If you don't already have a better image get one that you can reduce / enlarge to make a template. This is a good one:

If you don't have an image program that you can work with (Powerpoint is great for 8.5x11 images or smaller) then I would recommend PosterRazor. It lets you select your dimensions and it prints it on as many pages as you need for your size. Print them, put them together, and laminate both sides with packing tape. Use an exacto knife to cut out all the details. Now you have an excellent template to work with.

Roll out your gumpaste and use the template and your exacto knife to cut the shape using your template. Let it dry and use.

Since you're new I don't know your skill level so I hope I didn't go too far above or below your head. I would love to know how this works out for you! Best of luck!

EDITED TO SAY: Sorry I reread you OP just now and I totally missed the point, didn't I? You want it small on a crown, right? Do you have access to an edible image printer? If so would probably work best. If not, and it's really, really small you might have to hand paint "wing-like" shapes. If the wings will be bigger, you could still cut them out of gumpaste, maybe just not as intricately. HTH! I'll read better next time!! icon_smile.gif

How small is your crown, and how will this be positioned on the crown? Is it on the surface of the crown or are the wings coming off of the crown?

@cupadeecakes Thank you very much for your advice. I am new to this and unfortunately I do not have access to an edible printer. Since I have to scale it down so small I will try painting it. What do you suggest to use as edible paint? I will definitely let you know how it goes.

@tarabara My crown is 1ft round and about 6in in height. The logo would be positioned on the surface of the crown.

You might check with other bakeries in your area. Sometimes they will print out an edible image for you for a small charge. For hand painting, you could use edible markers, but it you need them silver, then I would recommend a tiny brush with some vodka or lemon extract and some silver luster dusts I like Nu Silver really well. Wet the brush in the alcohol/extract and then dip ever so slightly into the dust. Paint on the color. The alcohol will evaporate quickly and just leave behind the color. HTH!

Here's the cake. It's my first cake with fondant and gumpaste. Unfortunately, the wings were too hard for me to recreate. Thank you very much for the help. Where can I buy the luster dust?

I think you did great, especially for your first fondant cake! Your fondant looks smooth and your crown is standing up nicely.

As far as where you can get your luster dusts, you can Google N?u Silver Luster Dust, but I usually get mine online at Global Sugar Art or Pheil & Holing.
