I'd use a wire bent into a 5 shape instead of a stick so that you can support the shape of the 5 and bend the wire down out of the base of it. When you put it into the cake you could put the wire into a coffee stirrer so that the wire isn't directly against the cake.

Could you please explain that advice a little further? I can't quite picture what you're describing. Is the "5" wire inside of the gp 5? If so, how do you get it in there? TIA

I did a diagram because it's hard to describe. Since I'm always worried about the shape breaking off this is a good way to give it support throughout the shape, but make sure to give it enough time to dry before you use it.

You can also pipe a design on the top with royal icing, or add other gumpaste embellishments to it once it's cut out.

And of course it won't post here, so I put it on my blog. Here's the link. http://acaketorememberva.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-make-number-cake-topper-from.html

Wow, what a difference a diagram makes! Thanks so much for taking the time to show me. This method will work great with my Cricut Cake. I can cut the number from paper using my Cricut Expression and then shape the wire using that as a pattern. I can then cut a pair of numbers from gumpaste using my Cricut Cake and assemble as you described. I've always put numbers on a plaque on the cake because I've been too chicken to try the numbers standing up. Can't wait to try this new method. Thanks again!

No problem...Just make sure to let them dry flat and turn them over occasionally so that both sides dry out.
