For the cake on the top tier of a cupcake tower, what size cake would you use? The tower has square platforms, with the top one measuring 10" square. I was thinking about a two-layer 8" round cake. Is that too big for the top? I thought about making it a square but thought since the cupcakes were round, maybe the top cake should be too. And I thought the usual 6" round would appear too small for a 10" platform. Do you think?
Also, I assume I would make the cake on a cake board and just sit it on top of the tower, or do you usually transfer if off the board when you set up?

If this is a paid order, the size of the cake would depend on the number of servings the customer needs/wants and will pay for.

If cost is no consideration, you can invert an 8" cake pan (round/square) on top of the cupcake tower to get a sense of proportion. If you don't like that, you can try other size pans to see what you like best.
