So, I feel like a hug idiot right now. I had a customer pick up a birthday cake. She loves the cake, but later tagged me in a photo in Facebook thanking me for the cake and praising me for my work. Well, the birthday party is tomorrow, and dummy me left the H out of the word Birthday. I feel so badI cant even sleep. I tried to reach the customer, but was unable. I did text/message her and apologize. I did not tell her where the error was, but I informed her there was an issue with the cake and that I would either come by to try to fix the cake or refund her money. I had 4 other people including the customer look at the cake before it went out and no one caught the mistake. I never even noticed it until the picture was posted on FB. I dont think I can really fix it because the words are written in red on top of white cream cheese icing. What should I do?

Make a banner out of fondant with the correct inscription (whole thing) and place it over the existing inscription. You can see lots of banner inscriptions on my site (below) if you don't know what I mean. HTH

Thank you guys for your input. I feel much better today. I called the customer this morning to try to fix the cake. It was too late because she already gave it to the birthday girl. Long story short the customer thought it was hilarious and refused to accept a discount or refund. In fact she didn't even want me to fix it. The family had the party, no one even noticed the mistake, they loved the cake, and I may even have some future orders

This reminds me of what happened for my daughter's high school graduation. I had the entire family and some of her friends over for a party which totaled over 55 people. I made all the food myself and the pastries but didn't have time to actually make & decorate her graduation cake. I ordered it from a local bakery. When I got home, I realized that it read "congradulations" instead of congratulations. I didn't even bother calling them. Later when I saw the owner, I did mention to her so that they were more careful in the future. It just made the day more memorable. No one is perfect and I refuse to get upset over little things like this. Although, I do understand how you feel cause when I'm the one making the mistake it bothers me.

I did the same exact thing a few weeks ago! I didn't notice until I was showing pictures to my daughter after I delivered the cake. I had the words written on fondant "clouds" on the cake board. I made a new one with the "h" in Birthday. called the customer and went back and fixed it before the party. I asked her if she noticed, she said she did but didn't want to say anything because the cake was so cute. I said "please tell me in the future!" . It makes me wonder if other customers didn't say things they wanted to say because they were trying to be nice! lol. Most of them have very positive reactions that I know aren't fake. Some customers seem somewhat "underwhelmed" at the delivery and I always wonder.

I did a similar thing awhile ago. I made a cake for a friend who'd lost a child in an accident. I never noticed that I'd spelled sympathy as sympahty. Oh, was I embarrassed. I pointed it out to them when I delivered and they said they'd cut that part first so it wouldn't be seen. I was touched by their sensitivity to my feelings in view of what they had just suffered. They just appreciated what I made for them.
I certainly do a mental spell check now.

If you have knowledge, let others light their candles on it.
Never fear shadows. They simply mean there's a light shining somewhere nearby.

Yrs back when I was working for a well-known bakery in the next town the owner did something similar - left out a letter. It was caught right away - can't remember now who noticed it but when it was pointed out to him he threw the piping bag across the room and went in a corner (to cry??)
Thank you all for sharing your stories! That is why I love this website. I tried to talk to my family about it, but you know if you aren't in this business you don't realize how much a simple mistake like that can hurt. I felt terrible, but you guys have really made me feel better.
@ kakeladi...that was too funny. I could not imagine a grown man acting like that lol.

I did a groovy cake and misspelled awesome. I left out the 1st E. The customer never noticed and neither did I until I posted a pic and someone else pointed it out to me, lol. Sometimes I think your mind knows what it is suppose to be so when you scan it you just don't really "read" it and mistakes get over looked.
