My very unique 6-year son is requesting a disco ball cake for his birthday. It's actually pretty simple, but I'm have problems coming up with ideas for the little square glass mirrors on a disco ball. First, I thought of making them translucent with sugar, but I think it's too difficult and beyond my skill set. Then I thought maybe I could find a candy and just push it into silver icing. Don't know what that candy could be. Fondant is another option, but it would be great to make it translucent some how. I really want the glass effect. This cake is pretty good: http://yummycakesbylynn.com/?p=382

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Making sugar tiles is not difficult at all, I am sure you can do it. The way I would do this effect is by melting some sugar mixed with clear corn sirup in the microwave. Very simple and fast way to do sugar tiles. Then, I would colored the sugar mixture with silver dust when it still very hot and then proceed to pour the sugar in my silicone brownies mold. It's a 24 little squares mold very easy to find. Once they are cold and set, unmold and voilà! To have triangular pieces for the bottom and top of the ball, you unmold the square when they are still a little soft and hot and you cut them with a sharp knife. I have used this technic on my flower vase cake, you can see it in my pictures. The only problem I could think of with this technic is that sugar turns yellow when cooked. I might use Isomalt instead since it stays clear when cooked. HTH!

The cake in the link you posted, to me looks like it is just fondant with a silver luster dust on it.

How about fondant squares with edible silver leaf on them?I've never done it but I know there is edible gold and silver leaf available. I guess you could just google it. Hope that helps!
