Is Fondant Just For Looks And Not For Taste?

I went to a wedding this last week and had my first fondant covered cake. I've always wanted to try using fondant but was never really brave enough. Then I had that cake. icon_cry.gif my bubble was popped. I thought it would taste nummy. Am I wrong? We pilled the fondant away to eat the cake inside, and truth be told it wasn't that great either. So... what do you think? Was it just a bad cake or is fondant for looks only?

I use Fondarific. In my experience, this brand of fondant is eaten and enjoyed, just not the entire amount. It is like eating Tootsie Roll. A few are good. 20 will give you a stomach ache. I chose this brand and limited few others in a taste test with every brand I could readily get online and locally. My choice came down to taste.

Fondarific is also a great brand for aroma. The cake just smells good while it is sitting there before it is cut. It draws people in.

In that taste test, the brands ran from good to nasty, including some that smelled weird too.

I like it! When I'm not dieting icon_rolleyes.gif I can't stop eating the leftover bits while I'm doing cake. And if it's rolled fairly thinly, I don't think you can actually taste it that much on a piece of cake.

If the cake wasn't very nice either, perhaps the baker used a dodgy brand.

I love making fondant covered cakes....but can't stand the taste. I've found most people peel it off and eat the cake regardless of the brand. (Haven't tried fondarific though, not available where I am.)
So yes, IMO I think fondant is definately for looks not taste!

Same here. I do not like to eat fondant, not even an ity bity piece of it. I use Carma Massa Tocino Tropic fondant which smells and taste wonderful but it's just my personal preference not to eat it. A lot of people like it though. My in-laws love it.

I make my own mmf and I like it! Most everybody will eat atleast some of it! I think it does depend on how thick you roll it! If it is really think on a cake I think it tastes way to gummy with a nice moist piece of cake!

I think its really a texture thing. I make my own MMF too and always get compliments on it. Do I prefer it over just a BC cake? No.. Its really personal preference.

thumbs_up.gificon_biggrin.gif My DD and granddaughters would just eat the chocolate alone, because it really does taste like a tootsie roll!! Just be careful - Fondarific does not like the heat.

I just tasted the Nuwrap fondant at OSSAS and it was really good also. (tasted like eating a fresh marshmallow) I haven't worked with it yet, but I have a tub here and will this week. icon_biggrin.gif

I make my own MMF and everyone loves it! I save all my little left overs for a friend because she loves it so much and eats it like candy icon_smile.gif I agree that it really depends on the person, but in my experience homemade fondant is much better than store bought.

Personally I don't care for the taste of any brand I've tried. And lately I've been getting a lot of requests for non-fondant cakes. In my experience a lot of people don't like it and its frustrating when you go through all the work of making a beautiful cake and people peel off all the fondant and throw it away. I think it is best used for bows, figures, flowers and things that are added onto a buttercream cake to make it look nice, but as for covering a cake with fondant and then adding more fondant decoration, it is a lot of work and people do a lot of picking, leave a lot on their plate and the trash can fills quickly. kids seem to like it more than adults in my experience. I like to play with it and model things, it's like play-doh and is fun to mold with.

I've used NuWrap, it works well and you can roll it pretty thin. Its on the super hero cake in my photos. I also used it on a hamburger cake where I had to wrap a bit under the edge of the top bun because the underside would be seen and it held on just fine, no falling away or cracking.

I make my own rolled fondant, and it melts in your mouth. It tastes fantastic. It's very soft though, so I use Wilton for moulding, figures, and accents. It's just as easy to make as mmf, without the marshmallow flavor.

I think it depends on what you ware using..... Sadly, I think that it has gotten a bad wrap because people tried brands that look good but tastes like cardboard. I've used brands that look and taste good! I have to say that I just started making my own to save some money and am so happy with the results! It tastes so good and I can make it what ever flavor I want. Like CalhounsCakery said though, it is softer than the store variety, so I don't use it for shaping.

Some fondants taste gross. Am I allowed to list brands? Well I will, Wilton fondant tastes discusting. Then there are fondants that taste great, such as Satin Ice or Fondx. I acutally love the taste of Fondx!
Some people have an issue with the chewiness of fondant though and prefer buttercream. I personally love fondant! I find that usually people that are candy-lovers love fondant and people that aren't candy-lovers prefer buttercream.

In my opinion, I do think it's a texture and a taste thing. Some fondants out there really are disgusting.... I make a semi-homemade white chocolate fondant. It's good. 99.9% of my wedding cakes are fondant. They taste it, they order it. I also think the key is getting a normal layer of icing under a THIN layer of fondant. Most people like creamy icing when they bite into a piece of cake, not a thick piece of "bubble gum".

I make Michele Foster's fondant (MFF) and IMHO it tastes terrific. However, like scp said, fondant isn't something you'd want to eat a lot. You wouldn't mind tasting some minimal amount of it if it tastes great, but not to consume a considerable amount of it.
Oh well.... Maybe I just don't have a sweet tooth LOL.

Previouly I used MFF exclusively, but since recently, when people order a fondant covered cake, I normally ask first if they are super fond of sweetness, if they say they are just going for the looks, I use SatinIce or Pettinice, only else will I use Michele FF.

Since I knead my MFF by hand from the start till the end of the process, it pains me to know people may peel off the whole thing and dump into the bin if I were to cover the cake with it.
I don't mind knowing they throw out the store bought ones.
