Just a rant really. Delivered a cake today which I massively undercharged for (my fault- just relocated so want to get business but not yet found my value, so quoted low)

When the customer was paying the balance, she said "now don't spend it all at once"! Argh!!!! I'm not a little kid getting pocket money- I've worked my ass off on a cake which I was really pleased with (latest cake in pics) and I get patronised!!! Plus it's not like she was doing me a favour. She got a lot of cake for her money.

Client is quite sweet really but I didn't appreciate the comment! I of course just smiled and said thanks. Guess i need to be less friendly and more business-like so people dont treat me like a child.

Anyhow, rant over. At least I did a cake I was proud of! Anyone else had irritating comments from clients this weekend?!

Sometimes people say thoughtless things. Most don't mean anything bad, they just feel compelled to say something and unfortunately it's the first thing that pops into their heads. Trust me, you'll hear worse.

I agree. I would try to not take it too personally. People will say the weirdest things, and it's more a reflection on them, not you. Great cake thumbs_up.gif

Ah, that one is just tooooooo easy:

"Well, it's already been spent-----on the time and ingredients in that CAKE YOU'RE HOLDING."......(sweet smile)... icon_razz.gif

Yes, I would have said it............very nicely.

I wouldn't take it personally either, but I can totally understand why it would tick you off and you might need to vent. If people only knew the effort that went into making these kinds of cakes...and how much more they could be paying if you weren't so nice. The sarcastic person in me is daydreaming answering, " I have no choice but to spend it all in one place. There is not enough of it to split even in two!"

That totally went through my mind as I went out the door! Barely paid myself £5 per hour for it (am a fool). She's quite a nice lady and would have been mortified if I'd said anything!

Not angry about it or anything, just frustrated that people think its just flour and eggs! Sure I'll hear worse the longer I'm in business!

Sorry she didn't appreciate you like you thought she should. People just don't know what we go through. I am just a hobby baker but when my nephew and niece-in-law got married I did their cake and her mom said "Well they told me how good you were but I never thought you would be capable of that..." That was about 10 years ago and it still stings my butt every time I think about it. I realize that she was trying to compliment me now based on the past 10 years of things I have heard coming out of her mouth. (Kind of ironic how she has three kids and I have done wedding cakes for all three of them now). Gotta love it!

Well you did a fine job and pat yourself on the back and forget her!

mamadear-- I got a similar comment once. I made a cake for a friend's party that I was also invited to. A mutual friend came up to me and said, "well, I assume you didn't make the cake," you know, because it was too good for my skills... I was a little offended at first, but I quickly realized she had meant well and she was quick to compliment when I told her I had in fact made the cake.

oooohhhh yeeeesssss...I did my cousins wedding cake this past July...and let me tell you!!! My aunt and her sisters (they are my mother's cousins but we all grew up together and are quite close) kept trying to sway the bride to order her cake from a "professional" bakery and she kept insisting that I do them (her's and the grooms cake)...anyways...at the wedding, I kept getting remarks like: "Wow! I can't believe YOU actually made the cake! icon_surprised.gificon_eek.gif " SERIOUSLY icon_confused.gif ...like I'm not capable of it??? thanks for my mini rant! thumbs_up.gif

LOL!!!!! Wait! Wait! How about the reverse insult. People coming up to you all excited asking, "Did you make the cake???!!!!!", their little faces beaming. And then you think to yourself...hmmm.... I didn't make the cake. So you walk over to the table to take a look at this work of art everyone is so excited about and it is clearly a STORE BOUGHT CAKE!!!!!!! Sometimes a sheetcake none the less!

I just looked at your cakes Inc...the last cake you referred to.
Your cakes are very nice and clean and anyone would be proud to get one!

I don't understand why the client gave a snippy comment? I'm afraid I would have come back with
"Ok then I wont if you promise not to eat it all in the car on the way to the party" ...lol and I think that would have let her see how funny you thought her comment was!

I'm not rude but I do have a family member that I love dearly and is a very sweet person but she use to say comments like that to me until I started coming back with them! I really don't think she realized how she was coming off icon_wink.gif I always smiled after my comeback..and her comments just magically stopped at least towards me! Your work speaks for itself...very nicely I might add icon_smile.gif

People don't think before they talk. I'm sure I've offended someone along the line too.

I used to run a daycare out of my home. One parent (who was pretty nice but very spacey) said "so I suppose you want to get paid this week". Ummmm, really? Does YOU'RE boss say that to YOU on payday? Do you want your kid to come back on Monday? Then get out your wallet and stop complaining about the cost of childcare. Or stay home and raise your own kid.

Honestly, people think nothing of spending $300 per month for a car loan on a depreciating vehicle, but they are up in arms over spending $500 per month on someone caring for, feeding, teaching,
cuddling, and basically raising their child.

I even had one mom say "hmm, you must make good money, maybe I should start a daycare". Yeah, you do that. By the way NOT good money, and way too much work, and WAY underappreciated.

Perfect Rae!

Condescending remarks piss me off too if I'm in a snarky frame of mind.

And your cake is absolutely lovely, and I know that took plenty of time and dedication. Love, the double cake board. Genius idea!!

Thanks for the lovely comments and some sound advice!

So good to be able to vent here. I'd rather that than respond with a cutting remark to a client - it usually sounds good in my head, but comes off a bit sharp in reality!

In the meantime I'll just imagine myself coming back with a witty retort like Rae's suggestion!

99% of the comments I get at the market are good ones but every now and then you get one...today I had a lady admiring an owl dummy cake I had on display. She asked how much it was - I told her $220 - which around here is VERY fair. She looked at me all crazy eyed and said "You mean to tell me that people will spend that sort of money on a children's cake???" To which I replied, "Some people spend much more than that." And I couldn't help myself by adding, "BUT, if YOU can't afford it, we could do some owl cupcakes" lol that shut her up

Many people really don't know or understand about sculpted cakes. CC members live in our own insulated food world and we need to inform people. Maybe the next time they have a special occasion they may think about ordering a special cake. Letting the shopper know about a less expensive alternative also helps to educate.
