I made a 6 layer (8 inch round) cake to look like a keg for my friends grand opening on their brewery. I even put the 3 chocolate cakes on the bottom and the 3 white cakes are on top - I put a wooden dowel in the middle; thinking this was enough; each layer had decorator frosting and the I started to cover with white fondant - it started to lean on me - I ended up putting it on tray and finished it that way - so disappointed it couldnt' be upright. should I have put more dowels in it? I did bake the cakes a couple of days ahead and froze them; did that do it when they thawed as I frosted them? any suggestions is greatly appreciated - Thanks for your comments
did you have supports in the bottom layers to support the top layers. If not thats probably what went wrong
I would have doweled in the center and added probably 5 or 6 more half way between center and the side of the cake...so sorry you are having problems. Can you add more dowels now? put it back in the frig or freezer to firm up? HTH
Would you have made a 3 tier cake without an internal support system? That's essentially waht you did here. Rule of thumb is support for every 4" of cake. 4" of cake, dowels, cake board, 4" of cake... etc.... Then you ice it all as one for the effect you are looking for. HTH
As Kory explained it sounds like you did not put a cake board between the layers thinking the dowels would support it.
Since you made 6 layers you should have put 2 layers together w/icing(or other filling) on a cake board the same size as the cakes, then put dowels as support in it before doing that again, then a 3rd time - adding up to the 6 layers used.
As Kory said, (and trying to explain it another way) working up from the bottom you would have a cake board the same size of the cake(s); two 2 layer cakes; doweled, then another two 2 layer cakes on a cake board w/dowels; then the 3rd set of 2 layer cakes on a cakeboard. Putting a dowel longer than the total heigth of the cake down the center of all of these would help a bit in holding it all together expecially if it needed to be transported.
Yeah I agree you should have had a cake board between some of the layers. I just did a 6 layer cake but I used 3 - 9in chocolate layers and torted each one. It was 6 inches high. I couldn't imagine putting any more on top without a board.
definately need to put a cake board in between the layers, stacking 6 layers of cake with no cake board would be the same as stacking a 3 tier cake with no boards or supports.
